Windsor Spitfires Defeat Saginaw Spirit 4-3 in an Overtime Shootout at the WFCU Centre
By Chris Lucas
In Play! Magazine
The Spitfires defeated the Spirit in a shoot out by a score of 4-3.
Saginaw started off the game by applying a lot of pressure on Windsor but that all changed when Kenny Ryan tucked the puck in then net. A few minutes later Eric Wellwood had a wide open net and made no mistake in giving Windsor a two goal lead. Troy Passingham made some huge saves in the period in which he had to show his flexibility and quickness off.
In the second, Tyler Murovich got the puck past Troy Passingham to give the Spirit their first goal of the game. Windsor was all over Saginaw but Barry Sanderson scored on a break away while being short-handed to tie the game. Windsor answered with a goal of their own as Mark Cundari ripped a slap shot that got through traffic to give the Spits the lead going into the third.
The thrid period was filled with scoring chances and rough play from both teams but it was Saginaw who came through and scored late in the period as Josh Shalla roofed the puck to send this game to overtime.
No scoring in overtime brought the teams to a shoot out. Dale Mitchell scored for Windsor and Vincent Trochek scored for Saginaw making it 1-1. Then Cundari made a nice move while Shalla missed the net. Wellwood scored to finish off the Spirit and win the game.
Today's In Play! Magazine player of the game goes to Windsor goalie Troy Passingham. Making 34 saves in the game he came through in the clutch in Windsor's win.
Passingham explains to In Play! how the break helped him out.
“I needed a little break. In today's game my legs were feeling full and ready to go.”

Spits Out Shot But Still Beat London
By Chris Lucas
In Play Magazine
The Windsor Spitfires got out shot for the first time in 27 games but still managed to defeat the London Knights 4-2.
Scott Timmins scored early for the Spits to get Windsor off to a hot start to the game. But Jared Knight shot the puck off Troy Passingham and it trickled in to answer back. Patrick Murphy of Windsor and Pieter Schinkelshoek of London, dropped the mitts following the goal. There were some great hay makers thrown from both players. That would cap off the first period.
The Spitfires came out firing in the second period but they weren't able to find the back of the net until just over three minutes left in the period when Eric Wellwood made a nice move to score and give Windsor the lead going into the third.
Windsor would take a two goal lead on the power play as Mark Cundari blasted a shot from the point. Stephen Sanza would score another goal for London but it wasn't enough as Dale Mitchell finished the game with an empty net goal. The final shots on goal were 33-30 for London.
Tonight's In Play! Magazine player of the game goes to Troy Passingham. He made 30 saves against a tough London team. With some key players leaving to the World Junior Tournament, Passingham knows he has to step up his game and he did so tonight.
Passingham explains to In Play! about how he has had to improve his play.
“It was a big game against London and we were missing some key players. I think it's a good opportunity for me to show people that when we have a lot of shots, I can make the saves.”
Windsor will travel to Saginaw on Saturday to take on the Spirit. Game time is at 7 p.m. This will be the Spits last game until Dec. 31.

Spits host Sparky Toy Drive in loss to Kitchener
By Chris Lucas
In Play Magazine
Fans were able to throw their stuffed toys on to the ice after the Spits first goal due to the WCFU Centre playing host to the Sparky Toy Drive. However home fans didn't get the satisfaction of seeing the Spits win as Kitchener defeated them 5-2.
Justin Shugg scored early which flooded the ice with stuffed toys. That was the only goal of the period which sent the Spits into the dressing room with a one goal lead.
However in the second, Chris MacKinnon sniped a shot from the hash-marks to put Kitchener on the board. Ryan Murphy and Jeff Skinner would also score in the period to give Kitchener the 3-1 lead going into the third.
Shugg roofed his second goal of the game to start off the third and bring the Spits within one. But Jeremy Morin powered a slap-shot past Troy Passingham to extend Kitchener's lead to two. Passingham then made a few big saves following that but it wasn't enough as Skinner put in an empty netter to seal off the win for Kitchener. Windsor out shot Kitchener 49-34.
This has been the first time that the Spits have lost since Oct. 11th against the Sarnia Sting. Windsor also lost another player (Richard Panik) to the World Junior Hockey Tournament.
Shugg, who scored two goals in today's game, explains to In Play! how he is one of the players that need to step up their game due to the loss of some of their players. “D.J came up to me and told me that he's counting on me as a goal scorer.”
Today's In Play! Magazine player of the game goes to Mavric Parks of Kitchener. He made 47 saves against Windsor including a few clutch saves. He flashed the leather and showed off his quick reflexes in today's game as he played a key role in his teams win.
Windsor will have their rival London Knights come to the WFCU Centre next Thursday. Game time will start at 7 p.m.
Special Game Notes
- Today’s loss is Windsor’s first in regulation since October 11th against the Sarnia Sting and snaps a 24-game point streak for the Spitfires, during which time the team went 21-0-0-3. This was also the team’s first regulation loss at home in 13 games and only the second loss suffered by the Spitfires at home in regulation time this season.
- Forward Justin Shugg scored both goals for the Spitfires today and is averaging one point per game this season with 15 goals and 19 assists for 34 points in 34 games
- Spitfire players currently occupy seven of the top eleven spots in the OHL for plus/minus rating (1st Cundari +32, tied for 2nd Fowler +26, tied for 4th Henrique and Hall +25, tied for 8th Wellwood +22, tied for 10th Young and Nemisz + 21)
- Three Spitfires are ranked in the top ten for the OHL Scoring Race (1st Hall – 59 points, 2nd - Henrique – 53 points, tied for 5th – Nemisz – 48 points)
- Forwards Taylor Hall, Greg Nemisz, Adam Henrique and defenseman Ryan Ellis are currently out of the lineup for the Spitfires as they are attending Team Canada’s World Junior Selection Camp in Saskatchewan
- Defenseman Cam Fowler missed today’s game with an upper body injury, he is still ranked first amongst OHL defencemen in scoring and 14th overall in the league with 40 points in 32 games

Get To Know Your Spitfires: Kenny Ryan
By Chris Lucas
From my latest column in this month's issue.
In Play Magazine
On Oct. 20, 2009 Kenny Ryan left the United States of America to come and play for last season’s Memorial Cup Champions, our very own Windsor Spitfires.
Ryan was out on the ice at a very young age. His father would build him a rink in the back yard and at just two years old, Ryan was gliding across the ice (of course there were just a few falls here and there!). His first year of organized hockey was when he was four. He started off playing house league and just kept practicing to get where he is today.
Growing up, his favorite hockey player was Darren McCarty. When he was younger he was also involved in swimming and played football for his school team.
The Spits winger loves just hanging out with friends and going to the movies he tells In Play!

Oshawa upsets Windsor
By Chris Lucas
In Play Magazine
The Oshawa Generals took Windsor into a shootout and pulled off the win 5-4.
After a slow first period, the Spits started off the scoring as Ryan Ellis riffled one from the point. However, the Generals answered back with two quick ones both from Alain Berger. But Taylor Hall brought the Spits back into it with a goal of his own to tie it up. Conor Stokes would add one more for Oshawa to send them into the third with the lead.
Windsor would have a fast start to the third period as Kenny Ryan tipped a shot in and then Hall would snipe a shot past Kevin Bailie for his second of the game to take a 4-3 lead. In the dying minutes of the period, Berger sent Christian Thomas on a break away and he would blast a slap shot past Troy Passingham to tie the game and send it to overtime.
Plenty of chances but no goals in overtime as both tenders would come up with some huge saves sending this game to a shootout.
In the shootout, both Thomas and Dale Mitchell scored their shots to make it 1-1 going into round two. Calvin de Haan and Taylor Hall would leave the score where it was as they both got denied. It came down to the final shooters for both teams as Andy Andreoff was clutch to steal the win and end the Spits winning streak.
It seems Passingham was getting tired as he played back to back nights. Yesterday he traveled to Peterborough and allowed five goals and tonight he went to Oshawa and allowed four. It may be time to give him a few days off.
Tonight's In Play! Magazine player of the game has to go to Alain Berger of Oshawa. Berger assisted on the game tying goal that sent this game to overtime and he also contributed two goals in his teams win.
The Spits will be back home for a 7pm start Thursday night to take on the Erie Otters.

Spits Score Nine to Defeat Kingston
By Chris Lucas
In Play Magazine
Ryan Ellis scored a hat-trick to help Windsor beat the Frontenacs 9-2.
Ellis got the game going as he smashed in the one-timer to open the scoring. The Spits would take a 2-0 lead when Adam Henrique drove in the rebound. The Spits would have a 2-0 lead going into the second.
Kingston would close the gap to one in the second as Derek Froats scored. Immediately after, Harry Young ripped a shot from the point to extend the lead. It went up hill for Windsor from there as Ellis scored two more, Paul Bezzo added a goal, Wellwood roofed one and Dale Mitchell deflected the puck top corner. The Spits would fly into the third 8-1.
The Spits picked up where they left off as Greg Nemisz scored his 22nd of the season. Alan Quine from Kingston would add one more goal to end the game. The final shots on goal were 60-23 for Windsor.
The second period was an ugly one as Kingston started to throw a lot of cheap shots. Including cheap shoves in front of the net, taking runs and a few fists being thrown. However, the tough Windsor team stood their ground and fought back.
In Play! Spoke to Ellis after the game and he says, “We tried to get in there with them but it's fine because it's a Windsor style of hockey.”
In Play! Magazine player of the game goes to Ryan Ellis. Ellis scored his first, second and third goal of the year and recorded a hat-trick in today's game. He also played very well on the penalty kill clearing the puck multiple times.
Ellis tells In Play!, “It's good to finally score. I've has some bad luck hitting a few posts but it's good to get the ball rolling.”
Windsor has a nice long break as they don't play until next Saturday. They will travel to Peterborough and game time is set to start at 7 pm.

Spitfires Slide By Peterborough With Another Win
By Chris Lucas
In Play Magazine
Windsor defeats Peterborough in a shoot-out tonight by the score of 3-2.
Liam Heelis jumped off to an early start as he made no mistake in tucking home the rebound. However half way through the first, Adam Henrique flew down the right wing and sniped a shot over Jason Missiaen and into the net to tie it up.
It was a real quite start to the first half of the second period until Matt Puempel turned the puck over at the Spits blue line that sent him on a break away where he would score to once again, give Peterborough a one goal lead. It didn't take long to answer back as Justin Shugg hustled down the ice and fed a pass to Dale Mitchell that gave him an open net and he put it away to send both teams tied going into the third.
The third period favored Peterborough more than Windsor as it kicked off with Jamie Wise getting in a tilt with Saverio Posa. Wise won that fight and got the Peterborough bench fired up. But no one scored sending this game into overtime.
Drop of the puck sparked the Spits offense. In the first minute of extra hockey, the Spitfires had two chances to end the game, but Missiaen came up huge and kept Peterborough's hopes alive. A minute later, Ryan Ellis walked in and riffled a shot off the post. But the puck stayed out of the net and these teams will be going to a shoot-out.
First shot was Mitchell. He came blazing in and scored. Ryan Spooner also scored for Peterborough. Second round Hall shot and scored. Puempel got denied by Troy Passingham. A goal from Ellis and this would end the game. Ellis came in and scored to finish off the game and give the Spits the win. The final shots on goal were 41-28 for Windsor.
The Spitfires have not been a team that has won much in shoot-outs. On the other hand Missiaen, has not allowed a goal in a shoot-out yet this year. Sure enough, all three Spits scored on him.
Head Coach of Windsor, Bob Boughner spoke to In Play! and says, “We have been practicing more on shoot-outs. It helps to have Mitchell back and Hall has improved too.”
Tonight's In Play! Magazine player of the game goes to Dale Mitchell who scored the game tying goal and opened the scoring in the shoot-out to help pick up the victory for the Spitfires.
The Spits will be at home again on Sunday as the take on Kingston. Game time will start at 2 pm.

Spits Make It Nine Straight
By Chris Lucas
In Play Magazine
The Spitfires traveled to Plymouth and knocked off the Whalers 2-1 in a low scoring affair to continue their win streak to nine.
The Spits jumped off to an early start as Richard Panik scored the games first goal. A few minutes after, Scott Timmins deflected Ryan Ellis's shot to get a quick 2-0 lead in the game. Plymouth fired back with a quick one of their own as Josh Brittain scored to cut the lead in half. With some more time gone by, both teams were trying to gain the momentum, and that's when Harry Young squared up with Ryan Hayes. This didn't help either team as there were no goals scored in the rest of the period.
The second period was all about goalkeeping as both teams had 17 shots in the period and both goalies allowed no goals. It was a quite period for the most part other than two Spitfire penalties and one Plymouth penalty.
The Windsor Spitfires would start off the third period on the power play. However, Matt Hackett, of Plymouth, denied all goal attempts. This period showed some aggression from both teams as Leo Jenner took a run at Taylor Hall. This play led to a game suspension to Mark Cundari for being the third man in. This would also give Plymouth the power play and a chance to tie the score late in the game. But the Spits defense didn't allow many clear shots on net and killed the penalty and they took home the win. The final shots on goal were 45-38 for Windsor.
The Spits out shot their opponents once again. This is the 22nd straight game where the Spitfires have beaten the opposing team in shots.
Tonight’s In Play! Magazine player of the game goes to Troy Passingham. Passingham had 37 saves in this one. He came up big for the Spits in a lot of difficult situations and he helped them continue their winning streak.

Spitfires Play Key Roll in Team OHL's Win
By Chris Lucas
Photos by Dave Anton
In Play Magazine
Team OHL had a lot of help from Plymouth goalie Matt Hackett in defeating Team Russia 5-2.
It didn't take long for the Spitfire line to impress their home crowd as Adam Henrique banged home a rebound to open the scoring for the OHL All-Stars. Greg Nemisz and Taylor Hall were given the assists on the only goal of the period.
In the second period, the OHL All-Stars continued raising the score as Ottawa's Tyler Toffoli tapped the puck just past Russia goaltender Alexander Zalivin. This put Russia behind 2-0.
The OHL All-Stars would take two penalties giving Russia a five-on-three power play and give them the chance to put the puck in the net and make it a one goal game. But Hackett turned away several difficult shots to keep the lead where it was.
Tonight’s Subway Super Series In Play! Magazine player of the game had to go to the hometown hero Taylor Hall. Hall scored the game winner on the power play and had two points in the game.
Hall tells In Play!, “I'm a pretty competitive guy and I want to do good when I'm on the ice.”

Team OHL was not satisfied with a two goal lead as Hall put a nice move on Zalivin and scored on the power play to lift the deficit to three goals. This would send the OHL All-Stars to the dressing room with all the momentum. The third period showed a frustrated team as Russia tried to get the hitting game going. But it just led to some hard hitting from Team OHL, and a short-handed goal scored by London Knights Nazem Kadri as he showed his quick speed to put the puck in the net. This would leave the fans confident that they would wrap up the win, until Kirill Petrov put Russia on the board followed by another quick goal by Maxim Kitsyn to make it a close game. However Peterborough's Zack Kassian scored to end all hopes of a comeback.

Windsor Spitfires Continue To Roll
By Chris Lucas
In Play Magazine
Spitfires blow over Guelph Storm 11-3.
The first period told the whole story as Windsor contributed five goals from Taylor Hall, Paul Bezzo, two from Dale Mitchell and a rocket slap-shot from Greg Nemisz. Guelph's lone goal came from Peter Holland as he caught Troy Passingham out of position. Spits would have a huge 5-1 lead going into the second period.
Windsor would continue their attack as Adam Henrique would score to extend their lead. However Guelph wasn't going down without putting a few goals up on the board as Holland knocked in a rebound past Passingham and Taylor Beck scored on a delayed penalty. Windsor would go into the third with a 7-3 lead.
The third period was more of a physical style of game play. Starting off with Windsors' Kenny Ryan and Guelph's Cody McNaughton squaring up with each other. Following that, there were multiple scrums in front of both teams’ net that led to penalties by each team. Windsor didn't just play physical though, they also continued scoring. The line of Nemisz, Eric Wellwood and Austin Watson, scored all four goals in the period as they went on to beat the Storm. Windsor out shot Guelph 56-24.
The most noticeable thing in today’s game was the Spits’ special teams. Their power play was phenomenal as they scored five out of 10 attempts and killed all eight penalties.
Head Coach of the Spits Bob Boughner tells In Play!, “Our power play is working. We're going with a better net front to help our power play.”
Dale Mitchell is today's In Play! Magazine player of the game as he scored his first and second goal of the season today that helped spark the Spits offensive dominance over the Storm.
In the post game interview Mitchell tells In Play!, “It was nice to get the monkey off my back. I have to keep doing the little things to improve.”
Tomorrow night at 7 pm. The WFCU Centre will be hosting one of the Subway Series games. This series consists of Team Russia taking on the OHL All-Stars.
