Spits Out Shot But Still Beat London

By Chris Lucas

The Windsor Spitfires got out shot for the first time in 27 games but still managed to defeat the London Knights 4-2.

Scott Timmins scored early for the Spits to get Windsor off to a hot start to the game. But Jared Knight shot the puck off Troy Passingham and it trickled in to answer back. Patrick Murphy of Windsor and Pieter Schinkelshoek of London, dropped the mitts following the goal. There were some great hay makers thrown from both players. That would cap off the first period.

The Spitfires came out firing in the second period but they weren't able to find the back of the net until just over three minutes left in the period when Eric Wellwood made a nice move to score and give Windsor the lead going into the third.

Windsor would take a two goal lead on the power play as Mark Cundari blasted a shot from the point. Stephen Sanza would score another goal for London but it wasn't enough as Dale Mitchell finished the game with an empty net goal. The final shots on goal were 33-30 for London.

Tonight's In Play! Magazine player of the game goes to Troy Passingham. He made 30 saves against a tough London team. With some key players leaving to the World Junior Tournament, Passingham knows he has to step up his game and he did so tonight.

Passingham explains to In Play! about how he has had to improve his play.

“It was a big game against London and we were missing some key players. I think it's a good opportunity for me to show people that when we have a lot of shots, I can make the saves.”

Windsor will travel to Saginaw on Saturday to take on the Spirit. Game time is at 7 p.m. This will be the Spits last game until Dec. 31.
