With Players Out, Spits Win In Shoot Out

With Taylor Hall, Adam Henrique and Zack Kassian all out, the Spits defeated Brampton at home 2-1.

Brampton would start the scoring in this one as Alex O'Neil scored his first goal of the season. The Spitfires didn't look like they would make an appearance in this period until five minutes left when they applied a lot of pressure and had two great scoring chances but could not finish.

Windsor would start the second on a five-on-three power play but they could not do anything with it. Half-way through the game, Craig Duininck and Matt MacLeod had a solid bout as both players got their shots in at one another. Kenny Ryan then rifled a slap shot past Patrick Kileen that would tie the game going into the third.

The third period was a slow moving period until five minutes left when things started heating up. Scoring opportunities back and forth, big hits and great saves. But still neither team could find enough to take the lead.

The goalies were coming up huge for their squads which would bring us to more free hockey and end up in a shootout.

Ryan Ellis was the first shooter, and was the only one to score as he went to his back hand and roofed it which gave the Spits the win.

The biggest news for the Spitfires is the Kassian incident where he threw a huge hit on Barrie`s Matt Kennedy. Today his suspension was announced by OHL Commissioner David Branch. His sentence is a 20 game suspension which means he will come back with two games left in the season.

Kassian tells In Play! His thoughts on the decision.

“It was a hefty call but he makes the decisions. Now I need to stay in shape while I'm off and keep working hard.”

Tonight's In Play! Magazine player of the game goes to Philipp Grubauer. The Spitfire goalie was awarded the win tonight after stellar play. He made a huge save where he sprawled across the crease to make the save in overtime, and allowed no goals in the shootout and is rewarded by getting the start tomorrow in Kitchener.

Grubauer explains to In Play! How he is becoming more comfortable as the Spits goalie.

“The more I play the better I get.”

Windsor will travel to Kitchener to take on the Rangers tomorrow at 7:30 p.m.
