Windsor had some key players come back from the World Junior Tournament and return to their line-up in tonights 8-5 win over the Saginaw Spirit.
A high scoring first period was started off by Ryan O'Connor and Josh Shalla of Saginaw to give the Spirit an early 2-0 lead. But Kenny Ryan would answer back with a goal of his own. Michael Sgarbossa would immediately respond with a goal to give Saginaw a two goal lead once again. Following that, Taylor Hall would capitalize for Windsor on the power play and bury the puck in the net bringing Windsor within one. But Garret Ross slid the puck through Philipp Grubauers five-hole to give the Spirit a 4-2 lead going into the second.
The Spits started off the second with a goal from team captain Harry Young. Eric Wellwood would then score while being short-handed to tie the game. Then Shalla would score his second of the game to give Saginaw the lead once again. Greg Nemisz answered back with a goal and that would send both teams to the locker room all tied up at five a piece.
Nemisz, Hall and Adam Henrique added goals in the third to seal up the victory for Windsor.
The Spits tested out their new goalie (Philipp Grubauer) tonight and although seeing that Saginaw scored five, don't be fooled by that number. A few of the goals he allowed were on rebounds or bad defensive plays. Other than that, once he settled down he looked pretty good.
Tonight's In Play! Magazine player of the game goes to Adam Wallace. Although Wallace didn't tally up any points, he created traffic in front of the net and every time he was on the Spitfires had a scoring chance. He through the body constantly tonight and fought Saginaw's captain Tyler Murovich which took him out of the game for a little while. That fight also pumped up the crowd and the Windsor bench which may have helped spark their offense and help them win the game.
Wallace explains to In Play! how his fight may have gave Windsor a boost going into the third period.
“We were definitely struggling at the time and he challenged me so we went at it. It was a good opportunity to get the boys going.”
