On New Year’s Eve, Wellwood scored one goal in Windsor’s 4-3 overtime shootout victory versus the Saginaw Spirit at the WFCU Centre. The following night, he posted his second four-point night of the season, as he scored two goals and two assists, including the game-winning goal early in the third period and was named the first star of the Spitfires’ 6-3 win on the road over the Guelph Storm. On Saturday, Wellwood was held off the scoresheet in Windsor’s 4-3 loss on the road against the Plymouth Whalers.
Wellwood, a 19 year-old native of Oldcastle, Ontario, was selected by the Philadelphia Flyers in the sixth round of the 2009 NHL Entry Draft. He is in his fourth season with the Windsor Spitfires and has scored 20 goals with 18 assists for 38 points and he is tied for fourth in the OHL with a +26 plus/minus rating in 38 games for the Spitfires this season.
The defending 2009 MasterCard Memorial Cup and OHL Champions will host the Saginaw Spirit tomorrow night at the WFCU Centre.
