Spits Survive Rough Third, Edge Battalion

In Play on Facebook

windsorspitfires.com staff reports

On a night when his kid brother had a pair of big goals, Spitfire Jake Carrick had the last laugh.

The rugged winger scored in the eighth round of the shootout, as Windsor escaped with two points in a 6-5 win over the Brampton Battalion.

Zack Kassian had a pair of goals and an assist for the Spitfires, while Zack MacQueen, Jeff Brown and Stephen Johnston had a goal each for the Spitfires (25-15-1-1), who moved within two points of the Kitchener Rangers for third place in the Western Conference.

The Spitfires led 3-1 after 40 minutes. But a pair of bizarre goals in a span of 1:14 took care of that.

Scott Tanski somehow poked one past Jack Campbell in a massive scrum before Domenic Alberga tipped a point shot from Spencer Abraham up and over the goaltender's head to tie the game at 3-3.

Sam Carrick gave the Battalion their first lead at 6:41.

Then three goals in a little more than a minute left the teams deadlocked at 5-5 at the end of regulation.

On the opening shift of overtime, Zack Kassian was awarded a penalty shot. But, with the crowd roaring in anticipation, the big fella looked a little indecisive before missing blocker side on Brampton goalie Matej Machovsky.

Brampton out-shot Windsor 4-3 in the extra session, which didn't produce a winner. And it took a while to decide things in a shootout.

After Taylor Carnevale and Ian Watters each scored in the first round, six consecutive shooters were thwarted on each side.

Carrick finally beat Machovsky with a nifty move in the eighth round - faking a wrister before going back hand and roofing one.

Campbell stopped defenceman Dylan Blujus to give the Spitfires the win - for a strange end to a strange night.

The Spits will travel to Barrie to take on the Colts this upcoming Saturday. Game time is set for 7:30 pm, fans can watch the game live on TVCOGECO or tune to AM800 with Spits Play-by-Play Announcer Mike Miller calling the action.
