Spits Shutout Sting

windsorspitfires.com staff reports

John Cullen says he had this one marked on his calendar from the first day he landed with the Spitfires.

Traded to Windsor for Troy Passingham back in January, the 19-year-old goalie stopped all 23 shots he faced, blanking his old team in an 8-0 win over the Sarnia Sting Sunday at the WFCU Centre.

"That game was filled with emotions," Cullen said. "You go into it seeing familiar faces. But you have to block it out. It's tough, definitely added weight."

Tom Kuhnhackl had a goal and two assists, Zack Kassian scored the winner for the second straight game and 13 players had at least a point, as the Spitfires collected their 30th victory and moved into sole possession of fourth place in the Western Conference.

Cullen made 11 of his 23 saves in the second period, many before the game was out of hand, for his first shutout since he blanked Windsor 4-0 in Sarnia's home opener back in September.

The win earns him another shot in goal Wednesday night, as the Kitchener Rangers come to town.

Cullen gave all the credit for today's goose egg to his teammates.

"I made a few saves early. But, the guys came out and played so hard for me today. Getting eight goals, that makes me a happy guy."
