Spits Take Both Games in Barrie
By Chris Lucas

The Windsor Spitfires have won both games in Barrie as they defeated the Colts 5-4 tonight.
Mark Cundari scored an early short-handed goal for Windsor but, Alexander Burmistrov put one in at the end of the first while being on the power-play.
Windsor owned the second period as Marc Cantin and Zack Kassian both scored but Kyle Clifford put one in for the Colts to make sure Windsor doesn't run away with the game.
Scott Timmins buried one in the third to bring the lead back to two. Then Taylor Carnevale scored to bring it back to one. Dale Mitchell then sniped to put the lead back at two. A minute later Clifford scored to put it back at one. With Barrie applying tons of pressure, it wasn't enough as Windsor captured another win in Barrie.
This was a very big win for Windsor. Now they come back to Windsor for game three and four with a two game lead. This put Barrie in a tough situation. Even if they split one game each in Windsor, Windsor's still up 3-1. So now Barrie has to try and steal two wins in Windsor, which is not an easy task.
Tonight’s In Play! Magazine player of the game is Mitchell. Mitchell is known for clutch moments in Windsor, but hasn't been doing that in the playoffs. He has basically disappeared until tonight when he came up with another clutch play by out skating the Colts defender, then sniping a shot top corner and scoring the winning goal.
Game three will be at the WFCU Centre on Sunday. Game time will start at 4 p.m.

Windsor Spitfires Make Comeback for the Ages! OHL WC Champs.

Spitfires are the OHL Western Conference Champions!
Fans were in line at the WFCU Centre today since 6 a.m. to get the left over tickets to see this game seven of the OHL Western Conference finals. They knew they were in for a treat as the Windsor Spitfires came back from a three game deficit. They beat the Rangers today 4-1 to win the Western Conference Championship.
Adam Henrique scored the big first goal as he put in the rebound to score which sent this sold out crowd screaming and to their feet while waving their white towels. That was the only goal of the period.
Eric Wellwood kept Windsor's momentum going as he scored to give Windsor a 2-0 lead. Windsor fans felt confident, but Julian Cimadamore scored short-handed just before the end of the period to cut Windsor's lead in half.
When Scott Timmins scored in the third, the Spits and their fans knew they were in good shape. Then, Justin Shugg scored to lock up the game and the championship. Following the game, the Spits were cheered on and gave a standing ovation by the fans as they received the Wayne Gretzky trophy.
Windsor showed once again they can come back from any deficit as long as they play like they can. In a series like this where there is a comeback, usually there is a turning point.
Steve Spott, Head Coach of the Kitchener Rangers tells In Play! what he thought the turning point of the series was.
“I have the play down in my head. We had the puck late in game four. We didn't get it deep and we couldn't get Kel (Dan Kelly) out on the ice and Elly (Ryan Ellis) popped it up to Hallsy (Taylor Hall). Hallsy got us on a bad get-up and got the game winning goal in game four in our building. We turn the puck over to one of their best players and to me that was the turning point.”
A big part to their come back though was definitely the fan support. They never gave up on the team and the team never gave up on themselves and that really helped the Spits with their come back.
Taylor Hall talks to In Play! about their come back.
“When you're down 3-0 our team didn't really look at it as a deficit. We looked at it as a mountain to climb. We took it one step at a time and we knew that we had a chance to do something really special. We took it one game at a time and sure enough it disappeared pretty quickly.”
Bob Boughner tells In Play! how tough it was to dig themselves out of the hole.
“We made it really hard on ourselves early. It was a tough hole to dig ourselves out of and I don't know if we overlooked it a little bit or if we were just maybe a layoff early but you got to give these kids all the credit. They never gave up and the positive attitude and the energy in the room. The Rangers have a heck of a hockey team and their tough to defend against. It was just a tough series and tonight was no different they scored that short-handed goal at the end of the period and that took a little wind out of our sails and we had to re-group real quick. But it's a good dressing room in there and it was a heck of a series.”
Today's In Play! Magazine player of the game is Philipp Grubauer. For the fourth straight game, Grubauer has come up big in helping Windsor win. He recorded 26 saves and only allowed one goal.
Windsor's next series for the OHL Championship is against the Barrie Colts. A team who they have yet to beat this year in the two games they faced each other.
The series will begin on Tuesday in Barrie.
Spitfires’ Game Notes – Rogers Western Conference Championship Series, Game Six
- With tonight’s 6-4 win over the Rangers in Kitchener, Windsor has won three consecutive games in the series after being down 0-3 in the series. Windsor has forced a game seven in the series, to be played on Sunday at the WFCU Centre at 2:05 pm. The Spitfires and Rangers are tied at three games apiece in the Rogers Western Conference Championships. The Spitfires are now 7-0 with tonight’s win in elimination games over the past two seasons, as Windsor won four consecutive elimination games at last year’s MasterCard Memorial Cup Championship.
- If Windsor wins on Sunday, they would become the third team in league history to come back from an 0-3 deficit and the second time in Spitfire history that this has occurred, as the 2005 Windsor Spitfires squad defeated the Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds after the Spitfires were down three games to none. The Ottawa 67’s duplicated this feat, defeating the Oshawa Generals in 1988 after Ottawa lost the first three games of the series.
- The winner of Sunday’s game seven matchup will face the Barrie Colts, Champions of the Eastern Conference in the Rogers League Championship Series.
- Windsor outshot Kitchener 46-42 in the game. Windsor has outshot Kitchener in all six games of the series and 293-204 overall to this point in the series.
- Forward Scott Timmins scored a natural hat-trick against his former team in the second period tonight, including the game winning goal at the 9:37 mark of the middle frame. He was named the First Star of the game and has seven goals and eight assists for 15 points in 14 games.
- Forward Taylor Hall extended his point streak to 14 consecutive playoff games tonight as he scored two goals in the contest and was selected as the game’s Third Star. He now holds the longest point streak in the league during the playoffs, which currently sits at 14 games. His two point night is the 11th time that he has registered a multi-point game in the post-season. He is also tied for second in the OHL and for the Spitfire lead with teammate Adam Henrique, scoring 14 goals and leads the Spitfires in points while being tied for second in the OHL with 27 points in the playoffs. Hall is also tied for third in the OHL with a +13 plus-minus rating in the playoffs and he is tied for fifth in the league with 13 assists.
- Forward Adam Henrique scored one goal tonight and registered one assist in the win. He has scored at least one goal in five consecutive games, which is tied for the third longest streak in the OHL post-season and in eight of his past nine playoff games. Henrique is tied for first on the Spitfires and second in the OHL in goals scored with 14. He is also ranked third on the team and is tied for ninth in the league with 19 points in 14 playoff games.
- Goaltender Philipp Grubauer won his third consecutive game of the series, stopping 38 of 42 shots faced. He is also ranked first in the OHL with two shutouts and is tied for the league lead with 11 wins in 14 playoff games.
- Defenceman Ryan Ellis registered two assists in the contest, recording at least one point in all but one of the Spitfires’ playoff games. Ellis is ranked first amongst all OHL defencemen, and is second on the Spitfires in scoring with 26 points in 14 playoff games. He also leads all defencemen and is ranked first in the league with 24 assists.
- Neither team scored a power play goal for the second consecutive game, with Windsor being blanked on four opportunities and Kitchener on five chances.

Spits Survive Another One at WFCU

In Play Magazine
The Windsor Spitfires force a game six in Kitchener as they defeated the Rangers 3-0 tonight.
Taylor Hall scored the first one in this game as it would eventually go to be the game winner.
Adam Henrique added two goals in the second and third periods to send Windsor and Kitchener to a game 6.
Windsor played an excellent game tonight. They had stellar goal tending, a good penalty kill, they had the offense they needed and they threw their weight around. If Windsor plays like this in the next game, they are going to make it hard for the Rangers to finish off Windsor.
Head Coach of the Kitchener Rangers Steve Spott explains to In Play! how he wasn't too impressed with his teams performance tonight.
“Early in the game we set the tone with Gabriel's big hit. I was feeling pretty good at that point. We were a minute and a half away from a zero zero tie after the first and unfortunately gave them a late goal in the first period which i think sparked them a little bit. I didn't think we were very sharp tonight. Fortunately when you get to this time of year, you have to have a killer instinct and other than the gentleman to my right (Dan Kelly), who I thought was the best player for both teams. We didn't have enough guys step up and play with passion to be a good hockey club.”
Tonight's In Play Magazine player of the game goes to Philipp Grubauer for his impressive performance in between the pipes tonight. Making 28 saves and getting the shut-out but a lot of those shots were tough saves.
Grubauer tells In Play! his thoughts on his performance tonight.
“It was a pretty good game. I didn't care about the shut-out I'm just glad we won.”
Tomorrow night the Spits travel to Kitchener for game six. The puck will drop at 7:30 p.m.

Wolves’ John Kurtz is Recipient of the Mickey Renaud Captain’s Trophy
In Play Magazine
Windsor, ON – The Ontario Hockey League in association with the Windsor Spitfires hockey club held a media conference today to announce John Kurtz of the Sudbury Wolves as the second ever recipient of the Mickey Renaud Captain’s Trophy.
Kurtz, a 20-year-old from Oakville, ON, played four OHL seasons beginning in 2006-07 as a member of the Windsor Spitfires where he was teammates with Renaud. He played his final three seasons with the Wolves and served as team captain the last two years. Kurtz continued to wear Renaud’s number 18 sticker on his own helmet throughout his OHL career.
Kurtz was unanimously chosen by a selection committee as the OHL team captain that best exemplifies leadership on and off the ice, with a passion and dedication to the game of hockey and his community that Mickey demonstrated. The selection committee consisted of a media panel of four, representing each of the four OHL divisions.
“When I came into the OHL in Windsor, Mickey was the first guy to make me feel comfortable,” said Kurtz. “As a younger guy I really looked up to him and wanted to pattern my game after him. I was really happy when I saw this award presented last year, and am really honoured to win it this year.”
Kurtz was also the Wolves’ nominee for the Dan Snyder Memorial Award as OHL Humanitarian of the Year. He attended many fundraising events on behalf of the Wolves organization, and volunteered at community schools and at a local home for the developmentally challenged. He has won numerous team awards including the Wolves Most Popular Player Award, Most Improved Player Award, and was the Scholastic Player of the Month twice this season.
“John learned from Mickey’s leadership and always tried to exemplify his qualities to the younger players on the Sudbury Wolves hockey team” said Wolves General Manager Mike Foligno in his award nomination form. “His calming qualities and his confidence are attributes that other players respect. He has been an excellent role model for many hockey players on our team and in the community. We are truly thankful for having the opportunity to have known and worked with John.”
On the ice, Kurtz finished this season with a career-high 30 goals including a team-high 10 goals scored on the power play. He also added 16 assists for 46 points in 62 games. He scored his first career hat-trick November 20 as first star of a 3-0 win over the Saginaw Spirit.
The selection committee reviewed nomination forms submitted by OHL General Managers on behalf of their individual team captains. Nomination forms listed the characteristics of each captain both on and off the ice which demonstrate his strengths and commitment as a leader. Dedication to work in the community, as well as special team and league achievements and awards received through hockey, education, and community service were also considered.
Kurtz will be formally presented with the Mickey Renaud Captain’s Trophy at the OHL Awards Ceremony June 9 at the Hockey Hall of Fame in Toronto.

Passingham Gets the Call in Windsor Loss
By Chris Lucas

Windsor goes down three games to Kitchener with tonight's 5-3 loss.
Jeremy Morin scored on Kitchener's very first shot as it looked bad for Windsor as it was the only goal of the first period.
Zack Kassian and Adam Henrique scored back to back goals in the second to take a 2-1 lead. But Morin scored goals on his next two shifts to complete the hat-trick and to give the Rangers the lead once again.
The third was started off by Henrique putting in his second of the night. With just over a minute left in the game, and both teams tied at three, Gabriel Landeskog flipped the puck from center ice on goal, and it trickled through Troy Passingham's pads as that would be the game winner. Julian Cimadamore scored the empty netter to make the final 5-3.
A questionable call in the third as Windsor scored, then Taylor Hall got shoved into Kitchener goalie, Brandon Maxwell. The refs dis-allowed the goal and then gave Hall a penalty for goaltender interference and that really killed the Spits.
Bob Boughner, Head Coach of Windsor, tells In Play!
“We scored. Before that goal (game winner), we scored a goal. It didn't count. John Moore pushed Taylor Hall over into the goalie and was called interference. Henrique batted it in and Sean Reid's arm went up (Referee) after the puck was already behind the goal line. Terrible, terrible, terrible call. We should've been up 4-3 at that point.”
Tonight's In Play! Magazine player of the game is no surprise as it goes to Morin. He scored a hat-trick tonight and was clearly a huge part to Kitchener's win.
Windsor goes to Kitchener in a do-or-die situation on Tuesday for game four. Game time starts at 7 p.m.

Kitchener Wins in 13 Goal Game
By Chris Lucas
In Play Magazine
Kitchener defeated Windsor in game one of the Western Conference finals as they beat them 7-6 in overtime.
Chris MacKinnon scored first for Kitchener but Marc Cantin, Kenny Ryan and Cam Fowler all scored in a row to take a 3-1 lead. Jeff Skinner then scored back to back goals to tie it up going into the second.
Ryan tells In Play! about his first goal.
“I just went to the net, Cundari made a great play along the boards, there was a rebound there and i got good traffic in front of the net.”
The game continued back and forth as Ryan put in his second of the game. But this time Ryan Murphy scored back-to-back goals to give Kitchener the lead. Zack Kassian then scored but Jason Akeson replied with a goal of his own. Justin Shugg scored in the dying seconds in the second to tie it up 6-6.
Head Coach of Windsor Bob Boughner explains his thoughts to In Play! about pulling Philipp Grubauer after the second.
“After the second the coaching staff talked about it. With three minutes to go in the period, you sort of want to get out of the second period and make a decision. Probably if we were down coming out of the second, I would've made that change.”
With no scoring in the third, led to an intense over time. That's when Jonathan Jasper tucked home the winner.
Tonight's In Play! Magazine player of the game goes to Ryan. He played a big part for Windsor scoring two goals and even though they didn't get the win, he made his presence known in the game.
The Spits travel to Kitchener Saturday for game two. Game time starts at 7 p.m.

Spits Play Rangers for Western Conference Finals
By Chris Lucas
In Play Magazine
The Windsor Spitfires are currently undefeated in the playoffs and look to continue their playoff run as they now face up against the Kitchener Rangers for the Western Conference finals.
The Spits have an 8-0 record this year in the playoffs sweeping their first two opponents. This Thursday they will match-up against the Kitchener Rangers for game one of the series. Last year, Windsor knew how exciting it was to be this far into the playoffs as they ended up winning the Memorial Cup.
Head Coach of the Windsor Spitfires Bob Boughner explains to In Play! his last year experience.
“To reach that far into the playoffs was great and exciting for us and the fans and this year it should be another great series.”
Windsor and Kitchener had a 2-2 record against each other in this years regular season. However Windsor outscored them 17-14 in the four games. But Windsor had some missing players for some of the games due to the World Juniors and injury or suspension and were missing some key players in their line-up.
Head Coach of the Kitchener Rangers Steve Spott explains to In Play! how they have matched up this year.
“We had success in their building but they didn't have their best lines dressed because of the World Juniors. We know they have their best now and it should make for a good series.
A big part to Windsors winning in the playoffs has been their defense. So far, the Spits have allowed 16 goals in eight games, and a big chunk of that came from a 7-6 win over Erie in game three of the first series. Last series, they faced Plymouth and shut down Tyler Seguin, who is currently ranked to go first overall by the Central Scouting Bureau, and held him to zero points in all four games.
Harry Young, Captain of the Spitfires, tells In Play! how good their defense is playing.
“Our defense and special teams were huge so far. We're really going to work on our special teams for this series.”
Taylor Hall, Spitfires winger, has also been a big contribution to the Spitfires winning. He has 16 points in just eight games and is sixth overall in the playoffs. However Kitchener has the third, Jeff Skinner, and fourth, Chris MacKinnon, point leaders in the playoffs. Both Skinner and MacKinnon have 20 points in 13 games played.
Rangers captain Dan Kelly explains to In Play! the difference between Hall and Nazem Kadry of the London Knights, who they just eliminated and is currently ranked first in playoff points with 27 in 12 games.
“Kadry's very good with his stick but Taylors more quick. We're going to have to work on our gaps with him.”
There will be three games played this weekend. Two in Windsor, Thursday and Sunday, and one in Kitchener on Saturday. This Thursday's game starts at 7 p.m. Feel free to come watch and cheer for the Spitfires on their quest to be back to back Memorial Cup champions.

Windsor Spitfires Defeat Plymouth Whalers 3-2 in Overtime on the Road in Plymouth, Spits Sweep Whalers 4-0 in Western Semis
This story is being updated as news breaks.
Spits Sweep Whalers
By Chris Lucas
The Windsor Spitfires completed their four game sweep by defeating the Whalers 3-2 in over time tonight.
Plymouth came out on top of the first period as Ryan Hayes scored the only goal of the period. Windsor was all over Plymouth but Scott Wedgewood shut Windsor down.
Joe Gaynor then scored in the second for Plymouth. Windsor was all over Plymouth but, Wedgewood would not let anything past him.
Windsor didn't count themselves out however as Adam Henrique would score on the power play in the third. With Windsor applying tremendous pressure, they decided to pull their goalie with almost two minutes left in the game. It worked as Greg Nemisz banged home a rebound and sent this game to overtime.
With Windsor continuing the non-stop pressure, Scott Timmins slipped the puck past Wedgewood and would send the Spits to round three of the playoffs. The Spitfires out shot Plymouth by a number of 73-21.
The first two periods were tough on Windsor as they couldn't seem to get the puck in the net. There were numerous reviews up stairs and they were constantly ringing the puck of the posts.

Windsor Head Coach Bob Boughner explains to In Play! his feelings about the game.
“Our frustrations were natural. We couldn't score. We went through it last year and we found a way to win.”
Tonight's In Play! Magazine player of the game goes to Wedgewood. Hands down, he stole the show. He made 71 saves in tonight's contest, including multiple saves where he stretched from one side of the net to the other to make the save. He shut-out the Spits for the first two periods and almost won the game for Plymouth.
Wedgewood tells In Play! about the pressure coming into this game.
“We had nothing to lose. We had our backs up against the wall and we gave it our best and battled hard.”
Windsor now waits to see who they will play next out of Kitchener and London. The series is currently tied at two games a piece.

Towards the end of Monday night’s game, Hackett and Windsor forward Derek Lanoue collided behind the net. Hackett then chased him into the corner and punched him numerous times with his blocker.
The fans have been doing a good job getting under Hackett’s skin in this series and it has been giving an advantage to Windsor. The Spits will be going for the sweep tonight, and Plymouth will have to contend without their All-Star goaltender.
Tonight’s game will be in Plymouth at 7 p.m.

Spitfires’ Game Notes – 2010 OHL Playoff Round Two, Game Three
By Chris Lucas
In Play Magazine
Windsor blew out the Whalers 5-0 tonight as they now have a 3-0 lead in the series.
Dale Mitchell scored early to give Windsor the early lead. From there on out, it was nothing but Windsor.
Adam Henrique banged home a rebound in the second to score the only goal of the second period.
Eric Wellwood scored in the third and that's when it all started. The Windsor players and fans started getting under the Whalers players skin. Starting with defencemen Leo Jenner getting kicked out of the game. From there Ryan Ellis and Mitchell both scored on the power play to take their lead to 5-0. after that, Derek Lanoue and Matt Hackett collided, causing Hackett to throw punches with his blocker at Lanoue's head. Plymouth's Head Coach Michael Vellucci was also tossed from the game and that's how it would end.
Head Coach of the Spits Bob Boughner tells In Play! how he's glad the fans are helping them out.
“Our job is to try and frustrate the other team. It's great at home when the fans are chanting and we got that energy off it but, we had a lot of fans come over to Plymouth and that was a good thing about game two. We felt that presence from the fans and that helps us out.”
Taylor Hall explains to In Play! how you need to protect yourself when games start getting ugly.
“I didn't play when we went up 5-0, I just sat on the bench the last eight minutes and even if I went out there I'm sure I would have had Kassian on my side.”
Tonight's In Play! Magazine player of the game goes to Philipp Grubauer. He was given the shut-out in tonight's contest and had 16 saves. Even though there weren't a lot of shots, there were still a lot of times where he had to make a big save.
Grubauer tells In Play! how the team played well defensively.
“Our whole team did an awesome job in our end and they made it pretty easy for me back there.”
On Wednesday, Windsor travels to Plymouth to try for the sweep in game four. Game time will start at 7 p.m.
Hackett may be out for the next game due to suspension for punching Lanoue with his blocker. Check back to In Play! for further information.
