Eric Wellwood – The Precision Jewellers and Windsor Spitfires Player of the Month for January

(Windsor) Left-winger Eric Wellwood is the Precision Jewellers and Windsor Spitfires player of the month for January as selected by the Windsor Spitfires coaching staff. Wellwood led the team in scoring for the month with 10 goals and 13 assists for 23 points with a +9 plus-minus rating in 14 games played as he led the defending 2009 MasterCard Memorial Cup and OHL Champions to a 10-3-0-1 record in January.

Wellwood scored goals in 8 of Windsor’s 14 games during the month of January, including seven multi-point games. He posted four point games against the Guelph Storm, with a two goal, two assist effort on January 1st and against the Plymouth Whalers as he scored one goal and added three assists on January 18th. Wellwood also recorded two three-point games against the Saginaw Spirit on January 7th as he netted one goal and added two assists in this contest and also against the Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds on January 16th with three assists in the game.

Wellwood earned Windsor Spitfire player of the week honours twice during the month for the weeks ending January 3rd and January 17th. The 19 year-old Oldcastle, Ontario native was selected by the Philadelphia Flyers in the sixth round of the 2009 NHL Entry Draft.

Wellwood is in fourth season with the Spitfires and is tied for 15th in the OHL scoring race this season with 60 points in 53 games. He is also tied for 12th in the OHL with 29 goals scored and is tied for fifth in the league with a +32 plus-minus rating.

Wellwood recently represented the Windsor Spitfires as a member of the Western Conference All-Star team at the 2010 OHL All-Star Classic in Kingston, Ontario on February 3rd. Wellwood scored one goal in the contest, which was the 23rd goal of the game and established a record for most goals scored by both the Eastern and Western Conference All-Star teams in one game in OHL All-Star Classic history.

Prior to the commencement of a Spitfires home game in February, Wellwood will receive a Bulova watch from Dan Thomas of Precision Jewellers for his outstanding performance in January.
