A Total of Five Fights Tonight as Windsor Defeats Plymouth
By Chris Lucas
In Play Magazine
The best way to describe tonight's game is playoff hockey as the Spitfires defeated the Whalers 6-3.
Adam Henrique started the scoring in this one as he banged home a rebound. But Ryan Hayes silenced the loud Windsor crowd with a goal to tie it up. With Windsor on the power play, Henrique and Matt Hackett started stirring things up as Henrique shoved Hackett's mask. Windsor would not capitalize on the power play and would head to the second tied.
Taylor Hall buried the first one in the second by roofing one with a beautiful snipe from the hash-marks. Then Justin Shugg scored on a one-timer and the Spits would start to pull away. Hall was sent on a breakaway, but was hauled down and was given a penalty shot but Hackett turned him away. Greg Nemisz however, would rifle a shot top corner to give Windsor the 4-1 lead.
After some rough play from both squads, Garrett Meurs finished the loose puck. Tyler Seguin followed up with a slap shot from the point that trickled through Troy Passingham's legs. Ryan Ellis would put this game out of reach though with a one-timer from the point and Shugg would put in his second of the game on an empty-netter to seal the win for Windsor.
The officiating in this game was terrible, there were five total fights including Harry Young being put through the gate and into the Plymouth bench. Hackett was shoved down on four different occasions and both teams were constantly throwing cheap shots at one another. This was truly playoff hockey.
Head Coach of the Spits Bob Boughner tells In Play! about how he wanted his team to play this type of game. “Before the game I told them I wanted to treat it like a playoff game. We did a good job and we played a hard 60 minutes.”
Tonight's In Play! Magazine player of the game goes to Hall. He scored an important second goal for Windsor and set up Ellis at the point to put Plymouth out of reach.

Windsor Spitfires to Honour “Our Captain Forever” Mickey Renaud on Thursday, February 18th
(Windsor) Two years ago, on February 18th, 2008, the Spitfires along with the Windsor and Essex County community experienced a loss which will never be forgotten as Mickey passed away suddenly at the age of 19 years old. To honour Mickey’s memory, the Windsor Spitfires today announced that the team will host tributes, in remembrance of their “Captain Forever” Mickey Renaud at the Thursday, February 18th 7:05 pm home game versus the Mississauga St. Michael’s Majors at the WFCU Centre.
Prior to the commencement of the game, the Windsor Spitfires will be paying tribute to Mickey by way of a video presentation displayed on SpitsVision. The Spitfires will also recognize the inaugural male and female student winners of the Sutherland Global Services Mickey Renaud Scholarship Fund on-ice in a special ceremony before the opening faceoff.
To further honour Mickey’s legacy, the Windsor Spitfires will also establish a “Leaders in Our Sporting Community” wall at the WFCU Centre and will induct one person annually from the local area whose efforts have made a difference within the Windsor and Essex Community. The first winner of this award will be selected on February 18th, 2011 and recognized at a subsequent Spitfires home game.
Windsor Spitfires President and Head Coach Bob Boughner said, “It’s been two long years since Mickey passed away and we still think of him on a daily basis. Since he passed away, we felt it was important to recognize him in our dressing room, within the WFCU Centre through a display case made in his memory and also in our local area. We hosted some community based events earlier in the week in Mickey’s honour and this Thursday’s game is an extension of this. We know that Mickey was with us last year and was a big part of our championship run. Mickey taught us so much about leadership both on and off the ice and his contributions to our team helped make us champions and still live to this very day. We are proud to honour Mickey’s memory and are also looking forward to remembering “Our Captain Forever” at our game on Thursday.”

The Spitfires will also recognize the inaugural male and female student winners of the Sutherland Global Services Mickey Renaud Scholarship Fund on-ice in a special ceremony before the opening faceoff.
The team will also be wearing specially made #18 jerseys for this game in honour of Mickey. The jerseys will be auctioned off on the Spitfires’ website at windsorspitfires.com, with the proceeds to benefit to be distributed from the Windsor Spitfires Foundation to a charity of the Renaud family’s choice. A start date for the auction will be announced in the upcoming weeks.

Windsor Spitfires Blow Out Kitchener at WFCU Centre
By Chris Lucas
In Play Magazine
The Windsor Spitfires defeated the Kitchener Rangers 6-2 in a rough game.
Scott Timmins got the Spits started as he deflected in the only goal of the period.
Greg Nemisz took a rocket one-timer that was put past Brandon Maxwell to put the Spitfires up by two. Adam Wallace then smacked in the loose puck as the Spits were pulling away. Fowler continued the Windsor domination as he fired in his own rebound on the power play. But Matthew Tipoff silenced the crowd with a goal of his own. Things started heating up and tempers started flaring as Jeff Skinner shoved the ref after the whistle. But that wouldn't stop John Moore to try and make a comeback for Kitchener as he brings the lead within two. Nemisz potted his second of the game to give Windsor the three goal lead once again.
Ryan Ellis scored an empty-netter from his own blue line in the third to seal up the victory for the Spitfires.
The Spits have not had the greatest luck against the Rangers this year but tonight they looked like a new team. They looked better than they have all season.
Bob Boughner, Head Coach of Windsor tells In Play! his thoughts on tonight's game.
“Best overall game we've played in a long time. We played very physical and our power play was good.”
Tonight's In Play! Magazine player of the game goes to Greg Nemisz. Nemisz scored two goals and was a plus one on the night. In a rough game like tonight's, Nemisz contributed a lot of hitting and was not a player that was afraid to throw his weight around.
The Spitfires leave tonight as they travel to Sault Ste. Marie to play the Greyhounds tomorrow. Game time will start at 7:30 p.m.

Windsor Spitfires defeat the Owen Sound Attack on Disco Night
By Chris Lucas
In Play Magazine
Fans were able to dress up tonight into their 70's clothes to come watch the Spits dominate the Attack 8-2.
Ryan Ellis scored his eighth of the year on the power play with a slapper from the point. But Brendan Childerley put one past Philipp Grubauer to tie the game up. Then Mark Cundari one-timed the puck from inside the circle to once again take the lead. However, Bobby Mignardi sniped a beautiful shot top corner to send this game into the second all tied up at two.
Early in the second, Windsor came out all over Owen Sound and started it off with a Stephen Johnston power play goal. Windsor kept firing as Scott Timmins took a wild shot from the offensive corner that went in.
The Spits owned the third period as Derek Lanoue, Kenny Ryan, Timmins and Harry Young all scored to add insult to injury to the Attack as the Spits went on to win 8-2. The Spits out shot the Attack 50-18.
Tonight's In Play! Magazine player of the game goes to Timmins. He contributed two goals and two assists for a four point night. This was a big game for Timmins as he is a player who has the talent to break out, but hasn't until tonight.
Timmins explains to In Play! how he is now finding his groove. “I know I'm capable of contributing offensively and now I'm getting back into things.”
Tomorrow the Spits will travel to Erie. Game time starts at 7 p.m.
