Spitfire and Hitmen Notes:
The Windsor Spitfires, defending 2009 MasterCard Memorial Cup Champions, defeated the host Brandon Wheat Kings of the WHL 9-3 in the opening round robin game of the 2010 MasterCard Memorial Cup and are off to a 1-0 start in the tournament. The Calgary Hitmen defeated the QMJHL Champion Moncton Wildcats 5-4 in the second game of the tournament and are also 1-0.
Spitfires Taylor Hall, Ryan Ellis, Adam Henrique and Greg Nemisz will be facing Martin Jones and Brandon Kozun of the Calgary Hitmen in tonight’s matchup. All six players were teammates on Team Canada at the 2010 WJHC and won a silver medal at the tournament.
What’s at Stake:
With a win in today’s game, the Windsor Spitfires will advance to the 2010 MasterCard Memorial Cup Championship Game for the second consecutive season. If Windsor loses, Calgary’s and Windsor’s seed in the tournament would yet to be determined and would still be in question pending Calgary’s future matchup versus the Brandon Wheat Kings on Wednesday, May 19th at 8 pm EST.

- Windsor’s nine-goal performance was the most goals scored in one game the Spitfires by the team in their three Memorial Cup appearances. Windsor’s previous high was an eight goal performance in the opening game of the 1988 Memorial Cup versus the Drummondville Voltigeurs, an Windsor 8-3 win.

- Windsor scored the game’s first eight goals, including the contest’s first four within a span of 2:44 in the first period.
- With Windsor’s win against the Wheat Kings, the Spitfires have now won five consecutive MasterCard Memorial Cup games, dating back to last season as Windsor won four consecutive games in the 2009 MasterCard Memorial Cup on their way to the Championship. The Spitfires are also on a 9 game winning streak during this year’s playoff run.
