Toronto, ON – The Canadian Hockey League in association with the Brandon Wheat Kings and the 2010 MasterCard Memorial Cup Host Committee today announced that a donation of $30,000 will be made to the Dominion Command Poppy Trust Fund. The money was raised through an online auction of the Wheat Kings’ game-worn and game-issued commemorative jerseys for the opening game of the 2010 MasterCard Memorial Cup.
Poppy funds are spent to support veterans and their families, buy hospital equipment, support cadet groups, and provide student bursaries.
The commemorative jersey signed by Hockey Night in Canada hosts Don Cherry and Ron MacLean received the highest bid of any jersey at $3,800.
Commemorative jerseys worn by the last three hosts of the MasterCard Memorial Cup including the Brandon Wheat Kings, the Rimouski Oceanic, and the Kitchener Rangers have cumulatively generated over $90,000 for the fund.
The commemorative jerseys were designed by the CHL in conjunction with the Brandon Wheat Kings in honour of the Canadian Army, specifically the men and women past, present, and future of CFB Shilo. CFB Shilo is Manitoba’s only army base and is located approximately 20 minutes from Westman Place, home of the Wheat Kings.
The Memorial Cup was donated in 1919 by the Ontario Hockey Association as a memorial to the men and women who had given their lives in the defence of Canada during World War I. This year, the prestigious trophy was rededicated to all of Canada’s war fallen as part of the opening ceremonies of the 2010 MasterCard Memorial Cup at CFB Shilo.
The Memorial Cup was presented for the 92nd time on Sunday when the Windsor Spitfires became just the eighth team in history to win back-to-back titles.

Mississauga St. Michael’s Majors to Host 2011 MasterCard Memorial Cup
In Play on Facebook
Mississauga, ON – The Ontario Hockey League today announced that the city of Mississauga, ON, and the Mississauga St. Michael’s Majors hockey club will host the 2011 MasterCard Memorial Cup.
The 93rd edition of this prestigious national championship takes places May 20-29 at the Hershey Centre and marks the first time the games will be hosted in the Greater Toronto Area since the current tournament format began in 1972. The event will feature the champions of the Ontario Hockey League, the Western Hockey League, and the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League, along with the host Majors.
Four OHL member clubs including the Majors, the Barrie Colts, Kingston Frontenacs, and the Windsor Spitfires were all considered following their formal bid presentations to the 2011 MasterCard Memorial Cup Site Selection Committee on April 14, 2010, in Toronto.
“The Ontario Hockey League is extremely pleased and excited to award the 2011 MasterCard Memorial Cup to the Mississauga St. Michael’s Majors,” said OHL Commissioner David Branch. “The St. Michael’s Majors organization is steeped in a tradition of excellence and is highly regarded within the Canadian Hockey League and it is appropriate that they have the opportunity to host this very prestigious event. The city of Mississauga and the Greater Toronto Area is such an enormous market for hockey at all levels and we are confident that this event will excite fans in this area and enhance the experience for fans across the entire CHL.”
The 2011 MasterCard Memorial Cup Site Selection Committee is comprised of Toronto Blue Jays President and former CEO of Major League Baseball Paul Beeston, former NHL Executive Frank Bonello, Senior Vice President of Hockey Operations for the NHL Jim Gregory, and NHL Director of Central Scouting EJ McGuire. Committee Chair Gord Kirke and OHL Commissioner David Branch are non-voting members of the committee.
“The MasterCard Memorial Cup represents the pinnacle of junior hockey in North America. Sixty teams begin the journey every September and only four remain standing in May to battle for one of the most time honoured traditions we have in the game,” said Majors executive vice president Duncan Stauth. “The Memorial Cup represents nearly a century of hockey history and with today’s announcement the Majors hockey club, the Mississauga community and the Greater Toronto Area will have the opportunity to add to that rich legacy in 2011.”
The St. Michael’s Majors relocated to Mississauga for the 2007-08 season after playing ten seasons in Toronto beginning in 1997-98.
The organization has been a fixture in Canadian Major Junior hockey since the program was founded in 1907 when St. Michael’s College School implemented a hockey program. THE WINDSOR SPITFIRES ARE BACK-TO-BACK OHL CHAMPS
By Chris Lucas

The Windsor Spitfires swept the Barrie Colts as they defeated them tonight 6-2 making them the OHL champions for the second straight year.
Barrie started the game just like they needed to in front on the Windsor crowd. Luke Pither put the puck in early. But Cam Fowler answered back with a goal of his own which would bring the Windsor fans back on their feet and cheering.
The second period was owned by Windsor. Taylor Hall capitalized on the power-play giving the Spits the lead. But once again the crowd would be silenced as Matt Kennedy scored. But it was absolutely all Windsor from here. Fowler scored his second from the point. He slid into center ice for his goal celebration as Windsor slid into the lead. Then Adam Henrique buried one to end the period.
Scott Timmins scored one in the third as Hall scored in the empty net to secure their championship. For the final three minutes fans stood in front of their seats screaming and yelling waving their white towels while they watched their team soar into another OHL championship. Over 20 minutes following the game, fans were still their yelling their loudest and applauding the Spits. Every Spit that held and kissed the Robertson Cup afterwards, was cheered for. Looking onto the ice with confetti falling and players in red yelling and hugging and celebrating was an amazing site to see.
The Windsor Spitfires were one game away from being knocked out last series against the Kitchener Rangers and made a run of eight straight wins to comeback against the Rangers and then sweep the Colts.
Harry Young, Windsor Spitfire Captain tells in Play! about what a great team he has and how it was a big part in their comeback.
“This is a resilient group of guys. We showed it last year, we showed it again this year. It's the character in the room You can knock us down but you can't keep us down.”
Coming into this series, this has been the first time that I can remember this year, where the Spitfires were considered under dogs.
Hall, Spitfire forward explains to In Play! how they over came that feeling.
“We really relished that under dog role. We knew that if we can come in and steal game one and just go from there. Grubauer played well, our defense chipped pucks out and our forwards scored goals when we needed them to. Everyone contributed.”
Know with the OHL season officially done, the Windsor Spitfires will compete in the Memorial Cup tournament featuring all the other Canadian Hockey League's best teams where winner will be crowned the best junior Canadian hockey club. The Memorial Cup will start on May 14th.

*Games to be played if necessary
The Windsor Spitfires have won their seventh straight game and have took a 3-0 lead over Barrie in the OHL finals.
There was no scoring in the first period from either of the teams. Which brings us to the second which was nothing like the first. Justin Shugg capitalized on the power play putting the first goal of the game in. Then Adam Henrique potted back-to-back goals to take a 3-0 lead. But as we should know thus far, no one is out of any game or any series. Zac Rinaldo scored in his first game back from suspension. Then Stefan Della Rovere scored right after to bring them within one goal. But Scott Timmins would shut down all Barrie momentum with a break away goal and that would cap off the second period.
Adam Henrique scored his hat-trick goal in the third to give Windsor the 5-2 victory.
Towards the end of the game, Barrie started playing dirty starting multiple fights and running Philipp Grubauer behind the net.
Head Coach of Barrie Marty Williamson, tells In Play! how he feels about Grubauer getting run.
“I don't like it. You don't like to see those things in a game, it's a frustrating game and you just want to make sure no one gets hurt on a play like that.”
Ever since being down 3-0 to Kitchener last series. The Windsor Spitfires have not lost. They have now won seven straight and don't look like their ready to lose.
Adam Henrique, Windsor Spitfire forward, explains to In Play! how they played tonight.
“I think we started this game out flat. In the second period we picked up our play and things started rolling.”
Tonight's In Play! Magazine player of the game goes to Henrique. He had three goals tonight including one short handed one. His goals were scored at important times of the game and that helped the Spits defeat the Colts.
Head Coach of the Windsor Spitfires Bob Boughner, tells In Play! how he continues to be impressed with Henrique's play.
“It was a tough call in the Memorial Cup last year for MVP. I mean Henny (Henrique) dominated, Taylor (Hall) dominated. Henny's one of those players that just elevates his game at playoff time. He does so many little things right and that's why he's successful and that's why he's going to have a successful career. He never takes a short cut.”
The Spits play game four and go for the sweep on Tuesday. Game time starts at 7 p.m.

(Windsor) Windsor Spitfires Vice-President and General Manager Warren Rychel today announced the selection of defenceman Grant Webermin with Windsor’s first round pick, 20th overall in the 2010 OHL Priority Selection conducted online at ontariohockeyleague.com. Webermin, listed at 6’0” and 160 pounds, scored 2 goals and 13 points to go along with 62 penalty minutes in 32 games played with the Detroit Honeybaked U16’s Minor-Midget team.
In addition to acquiring Webermin, the Windsor Spitfires also selected 10 forwards, 3 defencemen and one goaltender in today’s draft.
“I think we had a good draft day and our scouting staff did a tremendous job in selecting talented players to build our team in the future. I’m very proud of every player that we have drafted, they all have a chance to play on our team someday,” said Warren Rychel.
