The Spitfires checking line pulled double-duty Thursday night, shutting down Ottawa's top line and producing a pair of goals as the Spitfires earned two big points in a 4-1 win over the 67's.

Stephen Johnston scored twice and earned first-star honours, while Jack Campbell was solid in goal, making 26 saves for the victory.

Jake Carrick and Tom Kuhnhackl had the other goals for the Spitfires (32-21-2-3), who moved two points ahead of the idle Plymouth Whalers for fourth place in the Western Conference.

The Spits will travel to the Soo to take on Greyhounds tomorrow at 7:30 pm. The game can be seen live on TVCOGECO or fans can tune into AM800 to catch the action with Spits Play-by-Play Man Mike Miller.

Sean Monahan had the only goal for Ottawa, which heads to Plymouth for a key match-up for the Whalers.

In Play on Facebook

windsorspitfires.com staff reports

It's the time of year when you need your veterans to play an honest, physical brand of hockey. That's exactly what winger Jeff Brown has done since coming over to the Spitfires from the Oshawa Generals.

Brown had a pair of goals in a 4-3 loss in Plymouth on Saturday night and a goal in Windsor's 7-5 comeback win over the Whalers the night before.

Hard Day’s Knight for the Spitfires

In Play on Facebook

windsorspitfires.com staff reports

If the race for fourth in the Western Conference wasn't tight enough coming into Monday afternoon's matchup with the London, it sure is now.

Michael Houser made 41 saves and Jared Knight scored a pair of goals, as the Knights beat the Spits 3-2 in front of 8,975 on Family Day at the John Labatt Centre.

The win pulls London to within two points of Windsor in the standings; the Spits are currently tied with Plymouth in fourth, but the Whalers hold the tie-breaker (head-to-head wins).

The Spits scored first and last, with goals from Jake Carrick and Tom Kuhnhackl. But it's what happened in between in a fast-paced, hard-hitting tilt that sent London to its 30th win of the season.

The teams exchanged second period goals in the opening five minutes, before Knight scored his first of the game on the power play with 4:10 remaining.

His second of the day and 24th of the season, less than two minutes into the third, was the dagger goal, putting the Spits down 3-1.

Despite three power plays in the final 15 minutes, including a long 5-on-3, Windsor couldn't cut into the lead.

Tom Kuhnhackl scored in the final minute with the net empty, on a blast from the right point. But the Spitfires never really threatened to get the tying goal.

Jack Campbell deserved a better fate in the Windsor goal. He made 28 saves, several of which came on breakaway or two-on-one chances for London.

Spits Fall 4-3 in Michigan

In Play on Facebook

windsorspitfires.com staff reports

Robbie Czarnik's empty net goal turned out to be the winner, as the Plymouth Whalers clipped the Windsor Spitfires 4-3 in Michigan on Saturday night.

Jack Campbell made 42 saves and Jeff Brown scored twice for the Spitfires.

The win gave Plymouth a split of a key home-and-home series and pulled the Whalers back within a point of Windsor for fourth in the hotly-contested Western Conference.

The Spits trailed 1-0 after 20 minutes, but evened things up early in the second period on Derek Lanoue's sixth of the season.

James Livingston gave Plymouth the lead back before the period was out, before Tyler Brown made it 3-1 Whalers, batting home a rebound, five minutes into the third.

Jeff Brown cut the lead to 3-2 at the 16:16 mark. But the Spits couldn't find the equalizer with Campbell on the bench.

Czarnik's 30th of the season put Plymouth up a pair with less than a minute to play.

Jeff Brown scored with nine seconds to go to round out the scoring.

The Spitfires are back in action Monday afternoon in London. We'll have a live game blog, real-time twitter updates, intermission analysis, full game recap and video highlights all on our website.

Spitfires Win One for Mickey

In Play on Facebook

windsorspitfires.com staff reports

Dozens of fans were headed for the exits, when a strange thing happened Friday night at the WFCU Centre.

Having surrendered four goals and facing another epic collapse in the third period, the Spitfires came to life with four goals of their own, in an improbable 7-5 over the Plymouth Whalers on Mickey Renaud Night.

"I'm not sure it's a script anyone could have written tonight to get the two points," assistant coach David Matsos said outside the Spitfires dressing room. "But it's a win. And that's what we've been looking for.

"We asked the guys tonight...told them it had to be a win. There was no other way around it. And we got it."

Ryan Ellis and Kenny Ryan each had a goal and three assists and Taylor Carnevale scored twice, as the Spitfires widened their lead over Plymouth to three points for fourth place in the Western Conference.

The comeback was a fitting tribute to Renaud, the team's former captain, who was honoured in a pre-game ceremony on the third anniversary of his sudden death back in 2008.

Things looked bleak for the Spits when Tyler Brown scored an unassisted, shorthanded goal to make it 5-3 Whalers at the 13:49 mark of the third period, capping a four-goal outburst in a little less than five minutes.

But Jeff Brown snuck a wrister from the right circle past Scott Wedgewood to cut the lead to 5-4, just 15 seconds later, before Ellis and Carnevale lit the lamp 1:11 apart to give the Spitfires a 6-5 lead.

Carnevale sent the home crowd into a frenzy with an empty netter with exactly a minute to play.

Jack Campbell made 16 saves after coming on in relief of John Cullen in the second period. Cullen left the game after hitting his head on the crossbar in a pile-up of players. He'll be evaluated again tomorrow and will not make the trip to Plymouth for the re-match.

The Spits will call up Michael Nishi from Georgetown in time for the trip to Michigan tomorrow.

Spitfires in Ranger Danger

In Play on Facebook

windsorspitfires.com staff reports

It was a fate they didn't want to suffer again.

Tobias Rieder scored with 1:26 to play, as the Kitchener Rangers beat the Windsor Spitfires, 5-3, on Wednesday night.

It was the second time in two weeks the Spits allowed their 401 rivals to escape their building with two big points.

Jerry D'Amigo had two goals and an assist. Ben Thomson and Jason Akeson had the other goals for Kitchener (33-15-3-3).

The win moved the Rangers seven points up on Windsor (30-19-2-3) in the Western Conference standings; a deficit the Spits will have a hard time making up, with just 14 games to play.

Tom Kuhnhackl scored twice for the home side and Ryan Ellis had three assists in a losing cause.

Tied at 2-2 after a spirited, hard-hitting 40 minutes, Thomson picked defenceman Grant Webermin's pocket and slid one past John Cullen to give Kitchener at 3-2 lead at 2:48 of the third period.

With five minutes to play, Ellis made an outstanding play to set up the tying goal, darting past a pair of defenders before spotting Kuhnhackl in front for his second of the night.

But the Spits couldn't hang on in the late going.

After a solid minute in the Windsor zone, Rieder wrapped one past Cullen to give the visitors a lead they wouldn't give back.

The Spits tried to get Cullen to the bench for the extra attacker, but coughed up the puck at centre ice allowing D'Amigo to score his second of the night as the netminder scrambled to get back.

Zack Kassian scored for a third straight game, his 200th in the OHL.

Tom Kuhnhackl was given a match penalty for slew footing in the closing seconds; an offense that carries a minimum two-game suspension.

Spitfires…trying to win when it counts

Spitfires more than just “rebuilding!”

The Spitfires don’t act like a rebuilding team but at the beginning of the season they were somewhat limited to that title with most of the Memorial Cup players from the last two years had moved forward to professional hockey. Recognizing the talent he already has, Warren Rychel also pulled a few new players out of the hat by the trade deadline, complimenting his already formidable roster.

Unfortunately, Windsor lost backup goalie Troy Passingham who had a respectable record including a few wins against elite teams. In his first year as a Spitfire, we took a real hit by dealing Eric Locke to Barrie who was scoring in bunches before he left.

Former Barrie Colt sniper, Taylor Carnevale is now situated with the Spitfires, occasionally finding the net as of late. Carnevale, an offensive entity gave Windsor fits during the playoffs last year with a high-achieving Barrie Colts outfit. The Soo surrendered Jake Carrick who brought an instant injection of toughness to Windsor, complimenting Kassian’s supremacy on the ice. He fights, and has showed everyone that yes, he can score.

Rounding off the incoming guys is former Peterborough defenceman, Adrian Robertson and Jeff Brown who was very effective at stirring up trouble in Oshawa, a real gritty player to be certain. Kerby Rychel is now back home from Mississauga, modestly contributing to the Spitfires cause. To top things off we acquired John Cullen from the Sting in the Passingham trade and Cullen has been sensational in net, playing like it’s his last game everytime he suits up. We had to lose a few in preparation for a Memorial Cup run but now we’ve got more toughness, scoring ability with the help of a few seasoned veterans who can lead the Spitfires into the playoffs.

During this “rebuilding” season, the Spits are actually becoming contenders in the West but are still trying to catch up to the Kitchener Rangers and secure a third place position in the Western conference. Home-ice advantage is the reward. The Owen Sound Attack and Saginaw will probably finish one-two when everything is said and done.

Are Spitfires up to the challenge?

We can see that Windsor is now stacked and prepared for the post-season but they are still having trouble picking up wins against the elite teams. A notable exception, Windsor tussled with the Ottawa 67’s on January 14/2011 and came out victorious (6-3) but Tyler Toffoli still managed to score two and assist on one. Ottawa is positioned in the top three in the Eastern Conference amongst the high-flying Mississauga St. Michaels Majors and the Niagara Ice Dogs who have shadowed the Majors all season.

Since January 1/2011, the Spitfires have performed fairly well but we need to beat the elite teams if we want to have a long run deep into the playoffs. Already this year, we succumbed to Owen Sound twice, Kitchener and a nail-biter against the Majors. The vastly improved Plymouth Whalers also stole two from the Spitfires and are considered to be a powerful emerging team coming out of the West. Saginaw is another force in the West having shutdown the Spits on three occasions this season.

It looked like Windsor would try to catch the Rangers but the Plymouth Whalers are going after Windsor in a very determined manner from behind. As of February 16, Windsor is just one point ahead of the Whalers.

Kitchener was in town hoping to steal one from the Spitfires. A glorious opportunity, Windsor tried to inch closer to that third spot where the Rangers presently sit. Cullen got the nod for the Spits and the Ranger’s Gabriel Landeskog was back from injury with a vengeance. Akeson and Murphy were red hot.

In the end though Kitchener holds a seven point lead as the Rangers dismantled the Spitfires 5-3 in front of 6276 @ the WFCU.

Spits Shutout Sting

In Play on Facebook

windsorspitfires.com staff reports

John Cullen says he had this one marked on his calendar from the first day he landed with the Spitfires.

Traded to Windsor for Troy Passingham back in January, the 19-year-old goalie stopped all 23 shots he faced, blanking his old team in an 8-0 win over the Sarnia Sting Sunday at the WFCU Centre.

"That game was filled with emotions," Cullen said. "You go into it seeing familiar faces. But you have to block it out. It's tough, definitely added weight."

Tom Kuhnhackl had a goal and two assists, Zack Kassian scored the winner for the second straight game and 13 players had at least a point, as the Spitfires collected their 30th victory and moved into sole possession of fourth place in the Western Conference.

Cullen made 11 of his 23 saves in the second period, many before the game was out of hand, for his first shutout since he blanked Windsor 4-0 in Sarnia's home opener back in September.

The win earns him another shot in goal Wednesday night, as the Kitchener Rangers come to town.

Cullen gave all the credit for today's goose egg to his teammates.

"I made a few saves early. But, the guys came out and played so hard for me today. Getting eight goals, that makes me a happy guy."

Attack Secure Top Spot in the West

by David Clark
In Play on Facebook

Running away with Western Conference supremacy is a dream for many this year. What a competitive place to be. Owen Sound is responsible for stealing the lead away from the Saginaw Spirit recently who have commanded the Conference for most of the season. The Attack had been chasing the Spirit in a very determined manner. Owen Sound’s loaded guns, Hishon and Wilson stepped up to the challenge.

On February 6, 2011 another Spirit/Attack battle happened at the Harry Lumley Bayshore Community Centre in Owen Sound where the Attack got by Saginaw with a spirited 5-4 win. On that day, the Attack finally pushed ahead of the Spirit in the standings, sitting four points in front of them. In the season series, Owen Sound has the better record with three wins to boast about and Saginaw earned two victories. A close rivalry to be certain.

In that last game, Andrew Shaw with Owen Sound scored in the third with 14.19 left in the period and that proved to be the winning goal. The Owen Sound Attack have been keeping Saginaw behind ever since the last conference matchup.

Windsor Spitfires - Zack’s Back

In Play on Facebook

windsorspitfires.com staff reports

He's been taking his fair share of heat lately.

But Friday night in London, Zack Kassian looked like his old self as the Spitfires knocked off the London Knights, 5-2, in a key Western Conference showdown at the John Labatt Centre.

John Cullen was outstanding in the Windsor goal, making 29 saves for the win.

Ryan Ellis had a pair of assists, giving him six points in the last 24 hours.

Kassian went to work early in the second with the game tied 2-2. The big winger eluded a couple of London defenders before stuffing one past London goalie Michael Houser, who took the loss despite making 28 stops.

Tom Kuhnhackl added an insurance marker later in the middle frame, again on the wraparound, beating Houser to the right post for his 28th of the year.

There's more to come as we head home on the bus. Check out windsorspitfires.com for a full game recap later in the evening.

Attack 6, Spits 4

In Play on Facebook

windsorspitfires.com staff reports

Andrew Shaw scored on a breakaway with just 2:45 remaining, as the Owen Sound Attack escaped the WFCU Centre with a 6-4 win on Thursday night.

The line of Joey Hishon, Garrett Wilson and Andrew Fritsch did plenty of damage, with a combined seven points.

Jordan Binnington made 27 saves for the win.

Ryan Ellis had a goal and three assists and Alexander Khokhlachev had a pair of goals in a losing cause for Windsor, which suffered its third loss in as many tries to Owen Sound this season.

The Spitfires battled back from deficits of 2-0, 3-1 and 4-3 to pull even at 4-4 on an Ellis power play goal early in the third period.

But a late turnover at the Attack blueline sent Shaw in alone on a breakaway for the winner.

Brayden Rose added an empty netter for Owen Sound (36-15-0-2), which extended its lead over Saginaw to six points atop the Western Conference.

The Spitfires (28-18-2-3) failed to close any ground on the Plymouth Whalers in their pursuit of fourth in the conference.

Jack Campbell was pulled from the Windsor goal for the second time in three games, after allowing three goals in the first 18 minutes.

Big Second Helps Otters Pound Spits

In Play on Facebook

windsorspitfires.com staff reports

Things started out just fine.

But by the time 40 minutes was done in Erie on Saturday night, the Spitfires couldn't wait to get back on the bus and out of Pennsylvania.

Brett Thompson had four goals and two assists and Phil Varone had a goal and four assists, as the Otters scored five times in the second period, turning a close game into an 8-2 blowout win.

Ryan Ellis opened the scoring for Windsor just three minutes into the first period, blasting a patented slapshot past Erie goalie Ramis Sadikov.

But Thompson's first of the night sent the teams to the first intermission in a 1-1 tie.

It didn't take long for Erie to pounce on the Spits in the second.

Two more goals from Thompson, sandwiched in with markers from Varone and Luke Cairns, quickly put the game out of reach, as the Otters (27-23-1-1) took a 5-1 lead.

Jack Campbell was pulled from the Windsor goal after giving up five goals in 28 minutes. He was replaced by Michael Nishi, who dressed as the back-up in place of John Cullen, who stayed back at the hotel with the flu.

A short while later, Zack Kassian, Alex Khokhlachev and Nick Ebert were all sent to the Windsor dressing room by the Spits coaching staff. They did not return.

Phil Varone made it 6-1 with a power play goal in the final minute of the second.

Anthony Luciani, Thompson's fourth and a late goal by Windsor's Brady Vail rounded out the scoring.

The win moved Erie to within three points of Windsor (27-17-2-3) in the Western Conference standings.

The Spitfires are back in action tomorrow afternoon in Brampton. We will have pre-game notes in our blog at 1:30. Radio pre-game show on AM800 at 1:45. TV coverage on Cogeco starts at 2.

Spits Blow 3-1 Lead Late in 3rd

Majors 4, Spits 3

windsorspitfires.com staff reports

Looking home and cooled and up two goals, the Spitfires suffered yet another late collapse at the hands of the Mississauga St. Michael's Majors on Thursday night.

And that was before Justin Shugg scored the winner in a shootout, giving his new team a 4-3 win over his old team.

Taylor Carnevale scored twice in regulation and Jack Campbell made 34 saves in the loss.

Derek Schoenmakers scored twice late in the third for the Majors to send the game to overtime.

A line of Carnevale, Jeff Brown and Tom Kuhnhackl - that hadn't played together all season - combined for eight points against the country's #2 ranked junior club in one of Windsor's strongest all-around efforts of the season.

LaSalle Sabres’ CHL Dreams Become Reality

Bond between LaSalle Sabres 98s and Windsor Spitfires grows stronger

TORONTO, Ontario (February 1, 2011) – The Canadian Hockey League (CHL) and its corporate partner Old Dutch Foods are pleased to announce the LaSalle Sabres 98s from LaSalle, Ontario, have won the CHL Hockey Day contest for the 2010/2011 hockey season.

On Monday, February 7, the LaSalle Sabres 98s will receive a “skills and drills” instructional session at the WFCU Centre, home to the CHL’s Windsor Spitfires – winners of the 2009 and 2010 MasterCard Memorial Cup – as well as a back-of-house arena tour, lunch and photos with the Spitfires, and special jerseys and medals for each participant. The LaSalle Sabres 98s will also attend a game as VIP guests of Spitfires. Rogers Sportsnet will be on hand to film segments of the “skills and drills” and CHL game, all of which will be featured at a later date on Rogers Sportsnet’s Connected.

"Every kid has a dream. LaSalle Sabres 98s have 17 dreams, probably all different but with a common thread: hockey,” says Kathy Kaufman, the parent who entered her child’s team in the CHL Hockey Day contest. “Spending a day with the Windsor Spitfires will provide the glue to bond this team of 12-year olds, and create a life-long memory for each one of them. We’re so grateful to the fine folks at Old Dutch Foods, the CHL and the Windsor Spitfires for making this dream of a lifetime come true.”

The LaSalle Sabres 98s have a special connection to the Spitfires. After the sudden death of Spitfires’ captain, Mickey Renaud, in February 2008, the LaSalle Sabres 98s decided to honour Mickey’s memory by featuring a #18 – Mickey’s jersey number – on the back of their practice jerseys for as long as the 98s exist. Mickey was well known to the LaSalle Sabres 98s through his participation in the Spitfire Adopt a School Program, and was always keen to offer inspiration and motivation to the young players.

“We couldn’t be more pleased to partner with the CHL in making dreams a reality for these future hockey stars,” says Scott Kelemen, National Director of Marketing for Old Dutch Foods. “It’s an honour for us to be able to recognize and reward these young players for all their hard work in a way that promotes fun, learning, and perseverance.”

Alexander Khokhlachev – The Windsor Spitfires Player of the Week

In Play on Facebook

windsorspitfires.com staff reports

The coaching staff wanted to spend more time in the offensive end last week.

KoKo seems to have heard the message loudest.

Alexander Khokhlachev is the Windsor Spitfires Player of the Week for the period ending Sunday January 30th.

Khokhlachev (5G, +4) scored in a 5-4 shootout loss to Plymouth on Thursday night, before exploding for four goals in a 7-1 win over the Rangers in Kitchener the following night.

The 17-year-old, 5'10", 172-pound centre from Moscow has been outstanding in his first year in the OHL, with 28 goals and 31 assists. Incredibly, Khokhlachev has played all but one game this season.

Those numbers rank him second in goals and points among rookies, behind only countryman Nail Yakupov (35G, 70pts).

Khokhlachev has been in the Top-20 in overall league scoring for the majority of the season.

He's currently 19th.

Next up for the Spitfires is a date with Justin Shugg, Marc Cantin and the CHL's #2 ranked team, the Mississauga St. Michael's Majors.
