Adam Henrique returns, Windsor Spitfire defeat Sarnia

By Chris Lucas
In Play Magazine

With the addition of another player back in Windsor's line-up, the Spits beat the Sting 4-1.

Windsor was all over Sarnia in the first but Sting goalie Shayne Campbell stood on his head shutting down the Spits as the Spits out shot them 12-4.

Stephen Johnston started off the second period with a couple of amazing moves around the defender and the goalie to take a 1-0 lead. Moments later, Justin Shugg sniped one in. The Spits would continue to dominate as Eric Wellwood smacked in the rebound on the power play to end the period.

The third period started the way it has all game as Shugg potted his second of the game. Brandon Fransisco scored to break Troy Passingham's shut out but that wasn't enough to force a comeback as the Spits went on to win another one.

Today's In Play! Magazine player of the game goes to Johnston. In his second game back he scored a beautiful goal to start today's scoring off. He threw his weight around and looked a lot more comfortable with the team.

Johnston tells In Play! how he felt better today than last game, but he's still getting the hang of things.

“I'm still getting used to things. Some of the guys are helping me get threw this and I'm still learning the system.”

The Spits are at home on Thursday to take on the Owen Sound Attack. Game time starts at 7 p.m.

Windsor Spitfires Blow-Out the Guelph Storm

By Chris Lucas
In Play Magazine

With a number of players missing, Windsor defeats Guelph 5-1.

Cam Fowler started the scoring off as he put one away while being on the power play. James Woodcraft would score his first of the year and give Windsor the 2-0 lead. But Michael Latta would cut that lead in half as he roofed one in the dying seconds of the period.

Limited action in the second as Guelph applied the majority of the pressure but were unsuccessful in trying to tie the game up.

The Spits owned the third period as Taylor Hall potted two including an empty netter and Eric Wellwood added a goal as Windsor went on to defeat Guelph 5-1.

Stephen Johnston made his Windsor debut tonight. He looked a little rusty at first but he started to settle down a little bit later. Windsor is going to have to give Johnston time to fit in with the team and allow him to get back into playing his style of game.

Stephen Johnston explains to In Play! his thoughts on his return.

“In the first period I was just trying to get my legs back and trying to figure out the system.”

Hall is tonight's In Play! Magazine player of the game as he had two goals and two assists and was a plus four on the ice. Those few games of rest looked like they helped as Hall was dangling and flying up and down the wings.

Hall tells In Play!, “When I'm a rested player I can play at the top of my game.”

Windsor will travel to London tomorrow night to play a huge rival game against the Knights. Game time will start at 7:30 p.m.

Spitfires’ Game Notes

- The CHL’s #3 ranked team leads the OHL with 81 points on the strength of a 38-7-0-5 record.

- Forward Taylor Hall extended his point streak to thirteen consecutive games, the third longest streak in the OHL, as he scored two goals and added two assists against the Storm and was named first star of the game. He also posted a +4 plus-minus rating. This was Hall’s eighth game of the season where he registered four or more points and he is ranked second overall in the OHL scoring race with 76 points in 42 games. With tonight’s performance, Hall has now eclipsed the 250 point mark in his career with the Spitfires and in the OHL. He is also tied for fifth in the OHL in goals scored with 32 and is third in the OHL with 44 assists. He is also tied for 5th in the league with a +29 plus-minus

- Forward Eric Wellwood played his 200th career game for the Spitfires and in the OHL tonight. He scored one goal and added one assist with a +3 plus-minus rating tonight and was selected as the game’s second star. In 12 January games, Wellwood has scored 8 goals and 21 points. He is currently ranked 15th in the OHL with 55 points in 42 games and he is also tied for 5th in the league with a +29 plus-minus rating

- Goaltender Philipp Grubauer improved his record with the Spitfires to 5-0-0-1 with tonight’s win. He has also registered a 1.99 goals against average and a .932 save percentage in his six starts with Windsor

Windsor Beats Niagara in Taylor Hall’s Return

By Chris Lucas
In Play Magazine

Taylor Hall returned to Windsor's line-up today as the Spitfires defeated the Ice Dogs 5-2.

Johnson Andrews and Adam Wallace started this game off by dropping the gloves and that got the fans on their feet. Niagara would be the first to score in this one as Alex Friesen put a loose puck in the back of the net. But Kenny Ryan would tip in a shot to tie the game up going into the second.

The Spits came out flying in the second as Michael Hasson deflected Justin Shugg's shot into his own net to give Windsor the lead. Hall and Ryan both roofed goals of their own to send Windsor to the third with a 4-1 lead.

The third period began with two heavy weights going toe-to-toe as Harry Young paired up with Josh Moes for a great tilt. Young got the better of Moes in this one. Shugg scored his second of the game as he tipped in Mark Cundari's shot from the point to put this game to rest. Reggie Traccitto added a goal in the dying seconds but it was too late as the Spits went on to defeat the Ice Dogs 5-2.

After a tough loss to Kitchener on Friday, the Spits were going to have to come out and play at the top of their game in order to get back on their feet and get a win and that's just what they did. Windsor looked like a strong team for the first time in a week.

Today's In Play! player of the game goes to Kenny Ryan. He scored two goals and it seemed that every time he was on the ice, he was either hitting someone or he was bringing the puck towards the net.

Ryan explains to In Play! how he's finding his spot this Spitfire team.

“Their giving me more opportunity and I'm just trying to take advantage of it. I'm also getting more comfortable too.”

Windsor will have a break until Thursday when they will take on the Guelph Storm. The puck is set to drop at 7 p.m.

With Players Out, Spits Win In Shoot Out

By Chris Lucas
In Play! Magazine

With Taylor Hall, Adam Henrique and Zack Kassian all out, the Spits defeated Brampton at home 2-1.

Brampton would start the scoring in this one as Alex O'Neil scored his first goal of the season. The Spitfires didn't look like they would make an appearance in this period until five minutes left when they applied a lot of pressure and had two great scoring chances but could not finish.

Windsor would start the second on a five-on-three power play but they could not do anything with it. Half-way through the game, Craig Duininck and Matt MacLeod had a solid bout as both players got their shots in at one another. Kenny Ryan then rifled a slap shot past Patrick Kileen that would tie the game going into the third.

The third period was a slow moving period until five minutes left when things started heating up. Scoring opportunities back and forth, big hits and great saves. But still neither team could find enough to take the lead.

The goalies were coming up huge for their squads which would bring us to more free hockey and end up in a shootout.

Ryan Ellis was the first shooter, and was the only one to score as he went to his back hand and roofed it which gave the Spits the win.

The biggest news for the Spitfires is the Kassian incident where he threw a huge hit on Barrie`s Matt Kennedy. Today his suspension was announced by OHL Commissioner David Branch. His sentence is a 20 game suspension which means he will come back with two games left in the season.

Kassian tells In Play! His thoughts on the decision.

“It was a hefty call but he makes the decisions. Now I need to stay in shape while I'm off and keep working hard.”

Tonight's In Play! Magazine player of the game goes to Philipp Grubauer. The Spitfire goalie was awarded the win tonight after stellar play. He made a huge save where he sprawled across the crease to make the save in overtime, and allowed no goals in the shootout and is rewarded by getting the start tomorrow in Kitchener.

Grubauer explains to In Play! How he is becoming more comfortable as the Spits goalie.

“The more I play the better I get.”

Windsor will travel to Kitchener to take on the Rangers tomorrow at 7:30 p.m.

OHL ANNOUNCES DISCIPLINARY ACTION – GAME OF JANUARY 14TH, 2010 – BARRIE COLTS AT WINDSOR SPITFIRES

Toronto, ON - The Ontario Hockey League today announced the result of its review of an incident which occurred in the game played in Windsor on Thursday, January 14th, 2010 between the Windsor Spitfires and the visiting Barrie Colts.

The incident in question involved player Zack Kassian of the Windsor Spitfires Hockey Club who was assessed a 5 minute major and game misconduct for charging as a result of his hit on Barrie Colts’ player Matt Kennedy who sustained a head injury on the play.

In making the announcement as the result of the review, Commissioner David Branch stated that… “while the League is persuaded that player Zack Kassian did not leave his feet prior to contact with the Barrie player, it is the position of the League that player Zack Kassian checked the unsuspecting Barrie player while such player was in a vulnerable position without having been in the possession of the puck. Players must understand that they shall be held accountable for their actions and we must continue to work to improve the level of respect players have towards opposing players”.

“It is the position of the Ontario Hockey League that player Zack Kassian of the Windsor Spitfires Hockey Club be suspended for twenty (20) games.”

Team Cherry Pulls Out a Win

By Chris Lucas
In Play Magazine

Team Cherry stole a win in the third period to defeat Team Orr 4-2.

The first and only goal of the period was scored by Nino Niederreiter as the puck just trickled in. The first period was a hard hitting period but none the less, Team Orr was winning.

The second period both teams didn't let up as they continued to throw their weight around. Half way into the second, both goalies were removed from the game and in came the back-ups. Etem Emerson would start the scoring for Team Cherry as he sniped a shot top corner while being short-handed to tie the game at one a piece.

Jeff Skinner would give Team Orr the lead once again in the third, as he tipped in Brandon Gormley's shot. But Jordan Weal scored right after to prevent Team Orr from running off with the score. Following that, the home town kid would feed a pass to Ryan Spooner on a two-on-one to give Team Cherry the lead for the first time in the game. Then with time coming to an end, Louis-Marc Aubry would score an empty-netter to give Team Cherry the victory.

Everybody thinks that this was more of an all-star type game, but the players showed tonight that this game, is a game where they can prove themselves. This will give every player to show scouts why they should be taken by them in the upcoming NHL Entry Draft. This game was filled with a lot of checking, two fights and a check from behind.

E.J. McGuire, Director of Central Scouting, tells In Play! that this is more than an all-star game.

“This is not an all-star game. These players aren't going to be tapping each other on the pads. Their going to be giving it their all to try and raise their stake.”

That's why tonight's In Play! Magazine player of the game goes to Austin Watson. During a critical point of the game, Team Orr was on a five-on-three power play. Watson killed one penalty by blocking a shot in the ankle and icing the puck from his knees', then limping to the bench. This showing he was truly giving it his all.

Windsor Defeats Sault Ste. Marie in a Rough One

By Chris Lucas
In Play Magazine

Game-misconducts were thrown around in this game as Windsor went on to defeat Sault Ste. Marie 4-1.

The Spitfires put that last loss to Barrie behind them early as Dale Mitchell took advantage of an open top left corner and buried it 17 seconds in to the game. Later on in the period, Mitchell would score again on a tic-tac-toe passing play from Eric Wellwood and Taylor Hall giving Windsor a 2-0 lead. Sault Ste. Marie started getting frustrated and began to play dirty.

Greg Nemisz continued Spitfire pressure early in the second as he sniped a shot in the back of the net. Minutes later Ryan Ellis contributed a goal with a slapper from the point and that's when goaltender Robin Lehner pulled himself out of the game and Bryce O'Hagan was forced to play against this tough Windsor offense. With numerous of cheap shots from both teams, a fight was long overdue and that's when players from both teams started pairing up and letting hay makers fly.

Vern Cooper broke Philipp Grubauer's shut-out in the third period but it wasn't enough to get anything started as the Spits would go on to win 4-1.

Tonight's In Play! Magazine player of the game goes to Mitchell. Tonight's performance from Mitchell was a memorable one for him. He scored the first two goals for Windsor, he created tons of traffic in front of the net, threw his weight around and stirred up some trouble with the other team.

The Spitfires will travel to Plymouth on Monday to take on the Whalers. Game time starts at 2 p.m.

Spitfires’ Game Notes

- The CHL’s #1 ranked Spitfires lead the OHL with 75 points on the strength of a 35-6-0-4 record and they lead the league with 225 goals scored

- Forward Dale Mitchell scored two goals including the game winner and left the game in the first period with an undisclosed injury

- Forward Eric Wellwood recorded three assists in tonight’s game and has six goals to go along with eight assists for 14 points in seven games during the month of January

Barrie Defeats Windsor in a Showdown

By Chris Lucas
In Play Magazine

The top two teams in the OHL collided tonight as the Barrie Colts defeated the Windsor Spitfires by a score of 4-2.

The game jumped off into the Spits hands as Zack Kassian tipped in Taylor Halls shot to give the Spits an early lead. Outstanding goaltending play kept this game at 1-0 Windsor going into the second.

Kassian got the fans screaming with an open ice hit followed by him dropping the gloves. However, Dalton Prout would silence the crowd with a precise shot from the point that went top corner and tied this game up.

Greg Nemisz would score early in the third on the power play to give Windsor the lead once again. But Kyle Clifford answered back with a back-hander passed Troy Passingham. As time ticked down, Windsor had all momentum until Alexander Burmistrov put the puck through Passingham's five-hole while being short-handed. Luke Pither would then bury the empty-netter to secure the win on the road for the Colts.

Kassian, who is a LaSalle native, made his debut with the Spitfires tonight and he was impressive. Starting off with a goal off of Hall's shot on his very first shift. Then throwing an exploding hit and not only dropping the gloves, pummeling Matt Stanisz in a fight making this packed crowd all fired up. This gave him In Play! Magazine's player of the game.

Kassian's performance tonight not only fired up his teams bench, but it also sent Barrie a message for the next time they play.

Kassian tells In Play! what he thinks about the hit. “They can take the hit anyway they want, I'm not going to change the way I play.”

Spitfires’ Game Notes

- The CHL’s #1 ranked Spitfires lose to the CHL’s #3 ranked Colts at the WFCU Centre

- With the loss, Windsor snaps a four game winning streak at home

- Right-winger Zack Kassian scored in his first game for the Spitfires and was ejected from the game after being assessed a game misconduct for charging in the second period

- Forward Taylor Hall, the reigning CHL and OHL Player of the Week, registered one assist in tonight’s contest and has recorded at least one point in each of his past nine games. He has regained the top spot in the OHL’s Scoring Race with 68 points in 38 games

Spitfires and Lancers Announce Inaugural OHL/OUA Scholastic Showcase

The Ontario Hockey League (OHL) and Ontario University Athletics (OUA), along with the Windsor Spitfires and University of Windsor Lancers are pleased to announce they’ll be hosting the inaugural OHL/OUA Scholastic Showcase on Sunday January 24th at the WFCU Centre in Windsor, ON.

The Scholastic Showcase, presented by the Investor Group, is an event designed to promote the ongoing partnership in education between the Lancers and Spitfires as well as the academic scholarship program in place between the OHL and OUA.

On Sunday, January 24th, the OHL will kick-off back-to-back games at the WFCU Centre with a match-up between the Windsor Spitfires and the Niagara IceDogs at 2pm. The OUA will follow as the University of Windsor Lancers are set to host the York Lions at 4:30pm.

The Scholastic Showcase is the first ever event of its kind and something both the OUA and OHL are excited to be hosting.

“We are very pleased to be able to announce the first ever OHL/OUA Scholastic Showcase set to take place in Windsor later this month,” commented OHL Commissioner David Branch. “This year alone, the Ontario Hockey League and its teams will provide our highest number of academic scholarships ever. We believe our OHL Scholarship Program allows our players to achieve the best of both worlds when it comes to hockey and academic goals and this event will certainly help to showcase that fact.”

Following graduation from the OHL, many players are now moving on to continue their education and hockey careers at universities across the province. OHL grads are eligible for academic scholarships through their junior teams if they choose to continue their education in post secondary institutions.

This year alone, 355 current and past OHL players were awarded academic scholarships throughout North America for the 2009-10 season. This figure represents the highest number of players that have ever received OHL academic scholarships in a single year.

"Ontario University Athletics has a shared interest with the Ontario Hockey League in helping prepare their student-athletes for life after their junior playing careers," commented OUA Executive Director Ward Dilse. "We hope that the inaugural OHL-OUA Scholastic Showcase is the first of many opportunities for hockey fans to celebrate the accomplishments of exceptional student-athletes in both leagues."

Currently, the University of Windsor has 10 former OHL athletes on their roster who are receiving over $80,000 in OHL scholarships this season.

In addition to OHL scholarships, each university in Ontario has the ability to offer athletic scholarships to augment these awards. At the University of Windsor, the Lancers also provide their top student-athletes with Blue and Gold athletic scholarships as part of the university’s scholarship program.

For the University of Windsor, this event is another opportunity to showcase their unique partnership in education with the Windsor Spitfires.

“We are excited to co-host along with the Windsor Spitfires the first ever Scholastic Showcase,” commented University of Windsor Athletic Director Gord Grace. “Our partnership in education with the Spitfires was one of the first of its kind in the league and we believe this event is another opportunity to promote how our two organizations are working together to promote education in the community.”

Currently, the Lancers have two former Spitfires on their roster, including team captain Scott Todd along with Jonathan Sciacca.

For the Spitfires, the defending MasterCard Memorial Cup Champions, their emphasis on education has also proven to be a vital part of their success over the past three seasons.

“The Windsor Spitfires are pleased to be partnering with the University of Windsor on the upcoming Scholastic Showcase on January 24,” added Spitfire governor, Lancer Hockey alumnus and U of W business grad Peter Dobrich. “Our organization’s emphasis on education over the past few years has been a critical component to our success and we will continue to work hard to ensure our players have the opportunity to continue their post-secondary education upon graduation from the OHL.”

The Scholastic Showcase will take place on Sunday, January 24th as the Windsor Spitfires host the Niagara IceDogs at 2pm followed by the University of Windsor Lancers against the York Lions at 4:30pm.

Fans that stay for both games will have the chance to win over $3,000 in cash prizes that day as part of the showcase.

Windsor Spitfires Defeat Sarnia Sting 4-1 at the WFCU Centre

Spits Defeat Sarnia for Second Straight Game

By Chris Lucas

Eric Wellwood potted two goals as Windsor defeated Sarnia 4-1.

Sarnia started the game off with a goal from Brent Sullivan to take an early lead. But Ryan Ellis answered with a rifle from the point to tie the game up. After that, it was all Windsor. Harry Young took a shot from the point, that was deflected by Wellwood to give Windsor the lead going into the second.

Windsor continued to dominate throughout the second, but could not manage to increase the score.

It was a close game going into the third, but that all changed when Wellwood roofed his second of the game. Immediately following, Adam Wallace scored his fourth goal of the year to finish off the Sting.

Even though Sarnia's record isn't the greatest this year, they're still a pretty good club. Today Windsor showed how dominate they are and can be as they were in control for the majority of the game.

Today's In Play! Magazine player of the game was given to Wellwood. Wellwood scored his 23rd and 24th goals of the season, and also the game winning goal, to help the Spits beat Sarnia for the second straight game.

Wellwood tells In Play! his thoughts on today's game. “We played much better than yesterday. We played with a lot more energy.”

Key Players Return in Spits Win

By Chris Lucas
In Play Magazine

Windsor had some key players come back from the World Junior Tournament and return to their line-up in tonights 8-5 win over the Saginaw Spirit.

A high scoring first period was started off by Ryan O'Connor and Josh Shalla of Saginaw to give the Spirit an early 2-0 lead. But Kenny Ryan would answer back with a goal of his own. Michael Sgarbossa would immediately respond with a goal to give Saginaw a two goal lead once again. Following that, Taylor Hall would capitalize for Windsor on the power play and bury the puck in the net bringing Windsor within one. But Garret Ross slid the puck through Philipp Grubauers five-hole to give the Spirit a 4-2 lead going into the second.

The Spits started off the second with a goal from team captain Harry Young. Eric Wellwood would then score while being short-handed to tie the game. Then Shalla would score his second of the game to give Saginaw the lead once again. Greg Nemisz answered back with a goal and that would send both teams to the locker room all tied up at five a piece.

Nemisz, Hall and Adam Henrique added goals in the third to seal up the victory for Windsor.

The Spits tested out their new goalie (Philipp Grubauer) tonight and although seeing that Saginaw scored five, don't be fooled by that number. A few of the goals he allowed were on rebounds or bad defensive plays. Other than that, once he settled down he looked pretty good.

Tonight's In Play! Magazine player of the game goes to Adam Wallace. Although Wallace didn't tally up any points, he created traffic in front of the net and every time he was on the Spitfires had a scoring chance. He through the body constantly tonight and fought Saginaw's captain Tyler Murovich which took him out of the game for a little while. That fight also pumped up the crowd and the Windsor bench which may have helped spark their offense and help them win the game.

Wallace explains to In Play! how his fight may have gave Windsor a boost going into the third period.

“We were definitely struggling at the time and he challenged me so we went at it. It was a good opportunity to get the boys going.”

Spitfires’ Game Notes

- The Spitfires raised a banner prior to the commencement of tonight’s game, recognizing the performances of 2010 IIHF WJHC Team USA gold medalist Cam Fowler and Team Canada silver medalists Taylor Hall, Greg Nemisz Adam Henrique and Ryan Ellis. The five players combined for five goals and eight points in tonight’s contest, with Nemisz netting the game winner one minute into the third period

- The CHL’s #1 ranked team leads the OHL with 68 points, on the strength of a 32-5-0-4 record

- Newly acquired goaltender Belleville Bulls goaltender won in his first start with the Spits tonight, and former Bulls defenceman Marc Cantin registered one assist in his first game for Windsor

- Three Spitfire forwards are ranked in the OHL’s top ten of the league’s scoring race (2nd Hall – 62 points, tied for 5th Henrique – 55 points, 10th Nemisz – 52 points)

- Six Spitfires are ranked in the OHL’s top ten for plus/minus rating (1st Cundari +33, tied for 3rd Fowler and Young +27, tied for 6th Henrique +26, tied for 9th Hall and Wellwood +25)

- Spitfire defencemen Mark Cundari and Cam Fowler are tied for 3rd amongst OHL defencemen in scoring with 40 points apiece

Windsor Acquires Grubauer, Cantin and Johnston from Belleville Bulls

(Windsor) Windsor Spitfires Vice-President and General Manager Warren Rychel today announced that the Spitfires have acquired goaltender Philipp Grubauer, defenseman Marc Cantin, centre Stephen Johnston and a 15th round pick in the 2013 OHL Priority Selection from the Belleville Bulls.

In exchange, the Spitfires have sent centre Richard Panik, defenseman Paul Bezzo, right-winger Austen Brassard, goaltender Stephen Gleeson as well as a third round pick in the 2010 OHL Priority Selection and a second round pick in 2012 (both originally from Owen Sound) to the Bulls. Windsor also sent their seventh round pick in the 2012 draft and 15th round picks in 2011 and 2013 to Belleville.

“Today’s deal was a tough one for our organization, as we traded three quality players off of our current roster but we strengthened our lineup for the playoffs in acquiring Grubauer, Cantin and Johnston. This deal also solidifies our situation for overage players next season and also strengthens our bid to host the 2011 Memorial Cup, as Cantin and Johnston could fill two of our overage spots in the 2010-2011 season,” said Warren Rychel.

The defending 2009 MasterCard Memorial Cup and OHL Champions will face off against the Saginaw Spirit this Thursday at the WFCU Centre. Game time is set for 7:05 p.m. Fans are encouraged to show their support for the Spitfires’ 2011 MasterCard Memorial Cup bid by filling out a ballot at the game or by visiting windsorspitfires.com.
