Owen Sound Attack Windsor

By Chris Lucas
In Play Magazine
Spitfires Writer

Owen Sound fought through overtime to beat the Windsor Spitfires 5-4 in a shootout on Thursday at the WFCU Centre.

The game started off with a heavy weight tilt as Owen Sounds' Jason Wilson went toe-to-toe with Windsor’s' Ryan Baldwin. Windsor had their scoring chances as they put 15 shots on net but Jordan Binnington of Owen Sound turned away all opportunities.

The second period the Spitfires jumped off to a quick start as Greg Nemisz put the puck past Binnington. Just under a minute later Chris Brown scored to give Owen Sound a 2-1 lead over the Spitfires. A five minute major for goalie interference penalty on Adam Wallace for skating into Binnington let the Attack capitalize as Wilson bashed in the rebound past Nishi to take the lead going into the third.

The third period started off the same as the second with quick scoring. Just over a minute into the power play, Cam Fowler scored a much needed goal to keep the Spits close. Then Eric Wellwood sniped one home to tie the game with just under 15 minutes left. So with a 4-4 tie, this would send the game to overtime.

Adam Henrique would shoot last for Windsor to try and keep the shoot out going but he was denied as the Owen Sound Attack defeated the Spitfires 5-4.

The Spits out shot the Attack 50-31.

Although Michael Nishi allowed four goals in today’s game, he showed that when he settles down he will be able to come up clutch in big situations when the Spits need him to and showed that he will make it as a starter one day in the OHL.

In Play! talked to Spits Head Coach Bob Boughner, and he says, “Nishi looked better as the game went on. It's hard to put a kid in that position. It's tough.”

In Play! then spoke with Michael Nishi and he says, “I found my groove in the third period and I wanted to play my game rather than try something else.”

Tonight’s In Play! Magazine Player of the Game had to go to Jordan Binnington who came up huge for his team to help them upset the Spits. Having 46 saves against Windsor’s high powered offence and he also contributed an assist in the game.

Ryan Baldwin Out, Spits Stand Strong.

By Chris Lucas
In Play Magazine

Even though Ryan Baldwin has been out for the past couple of games, the Windsor Spitfires have showed they can still stand up and play a physical game.

Warren Rychel, Vice-President and General Manager of the Spitfires, said they brought Baldwin in to add toughness to the team. But with Baldwin out, the Spitfires have certainly have not been backing down from any team. They aren't afraid to get in scrums, play the body and they certainly haven't been afraid to drop the mitts.

In Play! spoke to Bob Boughner, Head Coach of the Spitfires and he says, “Our team was built with toughness along with talent. When teams play Windsor, I want them to know that we're not just going to be a push over team.”

Spits Keep Rolling

By Chris Lucas
In Play! Magazine
Live from WFCU Centre

The Windsor Spitfires continue their hot streak as they beat their Conference rival London Knights 5-2.

Two seconds into the game, newly acquired Spitfire, Paul Bezzo dropped the gloves against London’s Steven Tarasuk, which got the fans immediately into the game. Just two minutes later Greg Nemisz found the back of the net to open up the scoring for Windsor. The Spitfires’ Mitch Dunning and Richard Panik both got nabbed on roughing calls which sent London to the power play when Taylor Hall intercepted the puck which sent him on a break away where he scored the Spits second goal. Three minutes later, the Spitfires kept the momentum going as Hall and Cam Fowler assisted on Adam Henrique's goal which would send the Spits to the dressing room with a 3-0 lead.

In the second period London’s Zac Rinaldo scored to put the Knights on the board. There was a lot of rough play from both teams throughout the period. Adam Henrique put his second of the game in the net with under a minute remaining in the period and the Spitfires went into the third with a 4-1 lead.

It was a big hitting and scoreless third period until near the end when Daniel Erlich of London scored to put the Knights within two. London pulled their goalie and Hall scored an almost controversial empty netter to finish off the Knights. The Spitfires out shot the Knights 32-15.

The reason for the controversy, Hall was tripped on an empty net break away, plus the flailing London player threw his stick in an attempt to derail the puck. Hall was able get through the gauntlet and score but it would have been an automatic goal regardless, due the multiple infractions.

More amazing than beating London, was the fact that Windsor held the Knights to only 15 shots. That is huge as it gives Passingham an easier time in net and increases their odds of winning tremendously. Shots for and against is a big part of the game and tonight the Spits held them to very little.

In Play! spoke with Spits Head Coach Bob Boughner after the game and he says, “Keeping them low in shots is more impressive than scoring.”

Taylor Hall is tonight’s player of the game as he scored a short-handed goal to boost Windsor’s momentum in the first period. Hall also contributed with another goal and two assist in tonight’s win which helped him achieve his 200th Ontario Hockey League Point.

The Spitfires look to continue their winning streak as they travel to Owen Sound to play the Attack.

Troy Passingham Jumps On Opportunity

By Chris Lucas
In Play! Magazine

Troy Passingham continued the impressive play on Thursday against the rival Knights.

The 19 year-old rookie recorded his first shut out making 33 saves in the 2-0 win. This isn't the first game Passingham has looked great. Passingham got the opportunity to start when veteran goalie Josh Unice went down with an injury.

If Passingham keeps up the stellar play, Unice might be looking at a back up position, when he gets back, and Passingham could take over between the pipes.

MASSE BETS ON SPITS

Friendly wager with Sudbury MP Glenn Thibeault

[WINDSOR]—Brian Masse (Windsor-West) an avid Spitfires fan is always willing to put his time and energy on the line for his favourite OHL team. After overhearing caucus-mate Glenn Thibeault (Sudbury) bragging about his Sudbury Wolves, Masse challenged Thibeault to a friendly wager the next time they met the reigning Memorial Cup Champs—Thibeault happily but perhaps not wisely accepted.

“It’s a good thing Glenn is a great Parliamentarian because he will never make a living as a sports handicapper” Masse commented.

The Spits will take on the Wolves this Monday October 12th at the WFCU Centre, the puck drops at 3 pm. Terms of the wager stipulate that the MP representing the riding of the losing team will spend an hour serving patrons at Dirty Jersey’s Sports Grill located on Tecumseh Rd. E not far from the WFCU Centre.

“Dirty Jersey’s gets pretty busy for Spits games. I hope Glenn wears sensible shoes.”

Windsor Spitfire fans are questioning back up goaltender Josh Unice's play right now.

The offence is proven that they are willing to win, but goalie Unice has not been playing up to his potential. Unice went from having a 2.67 goals against average and a save percentage of .908 last year, to a 10.27 goals against average and a save percentage of .690 this year. His performance will need to improve if he is willing to stay as the number two goalie in Windsor.

If he continues to struggle in between the pipes, the Spits might have to play Troy Passingham more often than not.

Henrique led the league in scoring with eight points including five goals and three assists while producing a plus-minus rating of plus-3 in three games.

Henrique capped off a three-game weekend Eastern Conference road trip with his top performance on Sunday with three third period goals to lead the Spitfires to a 6-3 win over the Kingston Frontenacs. Named the second star of the game, he netted his first goal just 30 seconds into the final frame to tie the score at three, and later scored the insurance marker at 15:14 before completing the hat-trick at 17:18 of the period to solidify the win. His week began with a goal and an assist in a 4-3 loss to the Ottawa 67’s on Friday night, before tallying a three-point night on Saturday in the 5-4 overtime win against the Belleville Bulls scoring one goal and two assists.

Henrique, a 19-year-old from Burford, ON, is in his fourth OHL season with the Spitfires. He was selected in the third round of the 2008 NHL Entry Draft by the New Jersey Devils.

Also considered for the award this week were Cody Lindsay of the Ottawa 67’s and Tyler Seguin of the Plymouth Whalers. Both forwards recorded seven points including five goals and two assists in three games.
