Spits Score Nine to Defeat Kingston

By Chris Lucas
In Play Magazine

Ryan Ellis scored a hat-trick to help Windsor beat the Frontenacs 9-2.

Ellis got the game going as he smashed in the one-timer to open the scoring. The Spits would take a 2-0 lead when Adam Henrique drove in the rebound. The Spits would have a 2-0 lead going into the second.

Kingston would close the gap to one in the second as Derek Froats scored. Immediately after, Harry Young ripped a shot from the point to extend the lead. It went up hill for Windsor from there as Ellis scored two more, Paul Bezzo added a goal, Wellwood roofed one and Dale Mitchell deflected the puck top corner. The Spits would fly into the third 8-1.

The Spits picked up where they left off as Greg Nemisz scored his 22nd of the season. Alan Quine from Kingston would add one more goal to end the game. The final shots on goal were 60-23 for Windsor.

The second period was an ugly one as Kingston started to throw a lot of cheap shots. Including cheap shoves in front of the net, taking runs and a few fists being thrown. However, the tough Windsor team stood their ground and fought back.

In Play! Spoke to Ellis after the game and he says, “We tried to get in there with them but it's fine because it's a Windsor style of hockey.”

In Play! Magazine player of the game goes to Ryan Ellis. Ellis scored his first, second and third goal of the year and recorded a hat-trick in today's game. He also played very well on the penalty kill clearing the puck multiple times.

Ellis tells In Play!, “It's good to finally score. I've has some bad luck hitting a few posts but it's good to get the ball rolling.”

Windsor has a nice long break as they don't play until next Saturday. They will travel to Peterborough and game time is set to start at 7 pm.

Spitfires Slide By Peterborough With Another Win

By Chris Lucas
In Play Magazine

Windsor defeats Peterborough in a shoot-out tonight by the score of 3-2.

Liam Heelis jumped off to an early start as he made no mistake in tucking home the rebound. However half way through the first, Adam Henrique flew down the right wing and sniped a shot over Jason Missiaen and into the net to tie it up.

It was a real quite start to the first half of the second period until Matt Puempel turned the puck over at the Spits blue line that sent him on a break away where he would score to once again, give Peterborough a one goal lead. It didn't take long to answer back as Justin Shugg hustled down the ice and fed a pass to Dale Mitchell that gave him an open net and he put it away to send both teams tied going into the third.

The third period favored Peterborough more than Windsor as it kicked off with Jamie Wise getting in a tilt with Saverio Posa. Wise won that fight and got the Peterborough bench fired up. But no one scored sending this game into overtime.

Drop of the puck sparked the Spits offense. In the first minute of extra hockey, the Spitfires had two chances to end the game, but Missiaen came up huge and kept Peterborough's hopes alive. A minute later, Ryan Ellis walked in and riffled a shot off the post. But the puck stayed out of the net and these teams will be going to a shoot-out.

First shot was Mitchell. He came blazing in and scored. Ryan Spooner also scored for Peterborough. Second round Hall shot and scored. Puempel got denied by Troy Passingham. A goal from Ellis and this would end the game. Ellis came in and scored to finish off the game and give the Spits the win. The final shots on goal were 41-28 for Windsor.

The Spitfires have not been a team that has won much in shoot-outs. On the other hand Missiaen, has not allowed a goal in a shoot-out yet this year. Sure enough, all three Spits scored on him.

Head Coach of Windsor, Bob Boughner spoke to In Play! and says, “We have been practicing more on shoot-outs. It helps to have Mitchell back and Hall has improved too.”

Tonight's In Play! Magazine player of the game goes to Dale Mitchell who scored the game tying goal and opened the scoring in the shoot-out to help pick up the victory for the Spitfires.

The Spits will be at home again on Sunday as the take on Kingston. Game time will start at 2 pm.

Spits Make It Nine Straight

By Chris Lucas
In Play Magazine

The Spitfires traveled to Plymouth and knocked off the Whalers 2-1 in a low scoring affair to continue their win streak to nine.

The Spits jumped off to an early start as Richard Panik scored the games first goal. A few minutes after, Scott Timmins deflected Ryan Ellis's shot to get a quick 2-0 lead in the game. Plymouth fired back with a quick one of their own as Josh Brittain scored to cut the lead in half. With some more time gone by, both teams were trying to gain the momentum, and that's when Harry Young squared up with Ryan Hayes. This didn't help either team as there were no goals scored in the rest of the period.

The second period was all about goalkeeping as both teams had 17 shots in the period and both goalies allowed no goals. It was a quite period for the most part other than two Spitfire penalties and one Plymouth penalty.

The Windsor Spitfires would start off the third period on the power play. However, Matt Hackett, of Plymouth, denied all goal attempts. This period showed some aggression from both teams as Leo Jenner took a run at Taylor Hall. This play led to a game suspension to Mark Cundari for being the third man in. This would also give Plymouth the power play and a chance to tie the score late in the game. But the Spits defense didn't allow many clear shots on net and killed the penalty and they took home the win. The final shots on goal were 45-38 for Windsor.

The Spits out shot their opponents once again. This is the 22nd straight game where the Spitfires have beaten the opposing team in shots.

Tonight’s In Play! Magazine player of the game goes to Troy Passingham. Passingham had 37 saves in this one. He came up big for the Spits in a lot of difficult situations and he helped them continue their winning streak.

The Spits will be back in Windsor on Friday to play Peterborough. Game time will start at 7 pm.

Spitfires Play Key Roll in Team OHL's Win

By Chris Lucas
Photos by Dave Anton
In Play Magazine

Team OHL had a lot of help from Plymouth goalie Matt Hackett in defeating Team Russia 5-2.

It didn't take long for the Spitfire line to impress their home crowd as Adam Henrique banged home a rebound to open the scoring for the OHL All-Stars. Greg Nemisz and Taylor Hall were given the assists on the only goal of the period.

In the second period, the OHL All-Stars continued raising the score as Ottawa's Tyler Toffoli tapped the puck just past Russia goaltender Alexander Zalivin. This put Russia behind 2-0.

The OHL All-Stars would take two penalties giving Russia a five-on-three power play and give them the chance to put the puck in the net and make it a one goal game. But Hackett turned away several difficult shots to keep the lead where it was.

Taylor Hall-OHL Select
Team OHL was not satisfied with a two goal lead as Hall put a nice move on Zalivin and scored on the power play to lift the deficit to three goals. This would send the OHL All-Stars to the dressing room with all the momentum.

The third period showed a frustrated team as Russia tried to get the hitting game going. But it just led to some hard hitting from Team OHL, and a short-handed goal scored by London Knights Nazem Kadri as he showed his quick speed to put the puck in the net. This would leave the fans confident that they would wrap up the win, until Kirill Petrov put Russia on the board followed by another quick goal by Maxim Kitsyn to make it a close game. However Peterborough's Zack Kassian scored to end all hopes of a comeback.

Team Russia Select
This was the second game between Russia and the OHL All-Stars and in both games; a Windsor Spitfire has scored the game winning goal. The Spits have played well in both games for Team OHL and have contributed a lot to the team. Tonight they had a combined four points in the win.

Tonight’s Subway Super Series In Play! Magazine player of the game had to go to the hometown hero Taylor Hall. Hall scored the game winner on the power play and had two points in the game.

Hall tells In Play!, “I'm a pretty competitive guy and I want to do good when I'm on the ice.”

Windsor Spitfires Continue To Roll

By Chris Lucas
In Play Magazine

Spitfires blow over Guelph Storm 11-3.

The first period told the whole story as Windsor contributed five goals from Taylor Hall, Paul Bezzo, two from Dale Mitchell and a rocket slap-shot from Greg Nemisz. Guelph's lone goal came from Peter Holland as he caught Troy Passingham out of position. Spits would have a huge 5-1 lead going into the second period.

Windsor would continue their attack as Adam Henrique would score to extend their lead. However Guelph wasn't going down without putting a few goals up on the board as Holland knocked in a rebound past Passingham and Taylor Beck scored on a delayed penalty. Windsor would go into the third with a 7-3 lead.

The third period was more of a physical style of game play. Starting off with Windsors' Kenny Ryan and Guelph's Cody McNaughton squaring up with each other. Following that, there were multiple scrums in front of both teams’ net that led to penalties by each team. Windsor didn't just play physical though, they also continued scoring. The line of Nemisz, Eric Wellwood and Austin Watson, scored all four goals in the period as they went on to beat the Storm. Windsor out shot Guelph 56-24.

The most noticeable thing in today’s game was the Spits’ special teams. Their power play was phenomenal as they scored five out of 10 attempts and killed all eight penalties.

Head Coach of the Spits Bob Boughner tells In Play!, “Our power play is working. We're going with a better net front to help our power play.”

Dale Mitchell is today's In Play! Magazine player of the game as he scored his first and second goal of the season today that helped spark the Spits offensive dominance over the Storm.

In the post game interview Mitchell tells In Play!, “It was nice to get the monkey off my back. I have to keep doing the little things to improve.”

Tomorrow night at 7 pm. The WFCU Centre will be hosting one of the Subway Series games. This series consists of Team Russia taking on the OHL All-Stars.

Spitfires Power Play Slumping

By Chris Lucas
In Play Magazine

The Windsor Spitfires have a deadly offense that most teams have a hard time keeping up with. However for the majority of the season, their power play hasn't been working.

With the return of Ryan Ellis, the Spits should be able to control the puck and create opportunities towards the net. But they’re not doing that. Most games they’re barely even getting shots on the power play; which is not a good thing.

In Play! spoke with Spits Head Coach Bob Boughner, and he says, “We have to get back to basics and it's definitely something we're going to work on.”

Unice and Baldwin Clear Waivers

By Chris Lucas
In Play Magazine

(Windsor) The Windsor Spitfires today announced that overage goaltender Josh Unice and overage right-winger Ryan Baldwin have cleared waivers. The Spitfires had to reduce the number of overage players to four today as per OHL regulations and the team kept Spitfires Captain Harry Young along with Scott Timmins and Dale Mitchell as the team’s overage players. The fourth open overage spot retained by the Spitfires will be available to the team until January, as OHL teams will then be required to trim their roster to three overage players in the New Year.

“The Windsor Spitfires would like to thank Josh and Ryan for their contributions to the team this year. With the unexpected return of Scott Timmins and Dale Mitchell to our lineup, we were forced to make a tough decision in putting both Josh and Ryan on waivers. We wish Josh and Ryan the very best of luck in their hockey careers,” said Windsor Spitfires Vice-President and General Manager Warren Rychel.

Spitfires Edge Plymouth at Home.

By Chris Lucas
In Play Magazine

Plymouth Whalers vs. Windsor Spitfires

With the return of Dale Mitchell, the Windsor Spitfires sneak a win by the Plymouth Whalers as they defeat them 4-2.

Mitchell started off the game with a couple of quick hits and a great scoring opportunity. However he couldn't find the back of the net so that allowed Myles McCauley to open the games scoring with a one-timer. The Spits go into the second down by one.

Windsor continued to apply pressure into the second period until Spits goaltender, Troy Passingham, gave the puck away to Garrett Meurs of Plymouth, where he would put one past Passingham to take a two goal lead. One minute later, Adam Henrique rippled the mesh as he took advantage of the extra man on the power play to bring the lead within one. This would send Windsor to the third down by one, but with a lot the momentum.

Windsor sparked their offense early in the third as Taylor Hall scored to tie the game up. With time running out and both teams trying to pull out a win, Justin Shugg of the Spitfires, knocked in Mark Cundari's shot to take the lead. An empty net goal from Henrique would lock up the win for Windsor.

The score may have been close but a big factor in hockey is shots for and against. The Windsor Spitfires always get a lot of shots and today not only did they rack up the shots, but they didn't allow much either. They finished the game with 49 shots on net and 16 against.

Bob Boughner, Windsor Spitfires Head Coach tells In Play!, “When we were playing five-on-five, we played well defensively.”

Tonight’s In Play! Magazine player of the game goes to Adam Henrique as he potted his 17th and 18th goals of the year tonight. He has scored at least one goal in each of his last five games.

Spitfires’ Special Notes

- The Spitfires lead the OHL with a 17-3-0-3 record, good for 37 points

- Adam Henrique was selected as the first star of tonight’s game, with 2 goals and 1 assist. Henrique has now scored goals in 5 consecutive games.
- Forward Taylor Hall leads the OHL Scoring Race with 44 points and also leads all OHL players in goals with 21 in 23 games
- Defenseman Cam Fowler leads the OHL Defenseman Scoring Race with 29 points as well as all OHL players in assists with 26 in 23 games.
- Goaltender Troy Passingham records his league leading 16th win of the season. He also leads the league with three shutouts and is ranked third in goals against average at 2.50

Spitfires Welcome Back Memorial Cup Hero Dale Mitchell

In Play Magazine

(Windsor) The Windsor Spitfires today announced that right-winger Dale Mitchell will be returning to the Spitfires lineup this season after a stint with the Toronto Marlies of the American Hockey League. Mitchell, a third round pick of the Toronto Maple Leafs in 2007 was instrumental in Windsor’s 2009 Memorial Cup Championship run. He single handedly rallied the Spitfires back from a 4-2 third period deficit against the hometown Rimouski Oceanic in the MasterCard Memorial Cup sudden death tiebreaker game, as he scored three consecutive goals in 3:33 and led the Spitfires to a 6-4 win over the Oceanic and a berth in the semi-finals.

Mitchell also enjoyed a productive regular season and OHL playoff run with the Spitfires in the 2008 – 2009 campaign, scoring 33 goals and 68 points in 68 regular season games along with 14 goals and 29 points in 20 playoff games, in helping the Spitfires capture the OHL playoff championship.

“The Windsor Spitfires are very pleased to welcome Dale Mitchell back to the team today. His addition solidifies an already strong corps of forwards on our team. Dale’s experience, energy, passion for the game and skill will be huge assets for us moving forward this season. The Windsor Spitfires ousted the Oshawa Generals 4-2 at the WFCU Sunday.

By Chris Lucas
In Play Magazine

It didn't take long for the Spits offense to get going as Adam Henrique scored on the power play to take an early lead. A few minutes of quite hockey, led to Windsor's Adam Wallace and Oshawa's Emerson Clark dropping the mitts. The next face-off, Spits Harry Young got in a fight with Generals' Alex Dzielski. That must have got the Oshawa bench pumped up because that set up a goal by Alain Berger which would send the teams tied going into the second.

It took a while for anything to happen in the second, but Berger would score his second goal of the game and more importantly give his team the lead. But Greg Nemisz and the Windsor Spitfires power play took advantage of a four on three power play as Nemisz would score his 18th of the season to tie the teams at two a piece.

The third period was much like the last as it took a while for any of the teams to do anything before Eric Wellwood found the puck in the hash marks and roofed it to score a very important go-ahead goal. The following shift, Scott Timmins scored to put away the Generals and give his team the win.

Today’s In Play! Magazine player of the game has to go to Eric Wellwood. Wellwood had the game winning goal as he came through in the clutch and scored when he got his chance to. Not only that, Wellwood played a very aggressive type of game.

Bob Boughner, Head Coach of the Windsor Spitfires tells In Play! he thinks his team played terrible. “We under estimated them, we're not preparing properly and our power play was bad.”

The Spits will have three days rest as the Plymouth Whalers travel to the WFCU Centre to take on the Spitfires next Thursday. The puck will be set to drop at 7 pm.
