Spitfires Trade Action Continues - Campbell Off to The Soo Greyhounds

Windsor – Windsor Spitfires Vice-President and General Manager Warren Rychel announced this afternoon that the Spitfires have traded goaltender Jack Campbell to the Soo Greyhounds in exchange for defenseman Mackenzie Braid, defenseman Patrick Sieloff (currently playing with US Development in Ann Arbor, MI), Kingston’s 3^rd pick in the 2012 OHL Priority Draft, Windsor’s 2^nd pick in 2013, Windsor’s 3^rd pick in 2013, Owen Sound’s 2^nd pick in 2014, Saginaw’s 2^nd pick in 2014 and the Soo’s 2^nd pick in 2015.

“Jack was the ultimate professional with the Spitfires,” said Rychel. “His dedication and commitment to the team was amazing. It will make him an excellent pro with the Dallas Stars. This is another step in our rebuild and an opportunity for him to win a championship in the OHL. All the best to Jack with the Soo, Team USA and his future career!”

Campbell was drafted by the Dallas Stars in the 1^st round of the 2010 NHL draft (11^th overall) and currently has 6-3 record including a shutout against the Sarnia Sting. Jack maintains a 3.13GAA and a .0906 SAV% in twelve games between the pipes for Windsor this year.

Braid is currently scoreless in 4 games with the Soo this season and played 59 games with the Barrie Colts in 2010-11 scoring 5 goals for 12 points.

Windsor Spitfire Jack Campbell Named Precision Jewelers Player of the Month

(Windsor) The Windsor Spitfires announced today that goaltender Jack Campbell is the Precision Jewelers Player of the Month for October 2011.

Jack is currently 6-3 including a shutout against the Sarnia Sting in late September and maintains a 3.13GAA and a .0906 SAV% in twelve games between the pipes for Windsor this year.

Campbell, the 19-year-old native of Port Huron, MI, is playing his second OHL season with the Spitfires after recording a 24-14 record in his 2010-2011 campaign, including a 3.80GAA and a 0.884 SAV%.

Jack Campbell Named Tecumseh & South Walkerville Vision Centres Player of the Week

(Windsor) The Windsor Spitfires announced today that goaltender Jack Campbell is the Tecumseh & South Walkerville Vision Centres Player of the Week for the week ending October 2^nd after helping lead the Spitfires to two comeback wins at the WFCU Centre against the Saginaw Spirit and Ottawa 67’s.

Campbell, the 19-year-old native of Port Huron, MI, is playing his second OHL season with the Spitfires after recording a 24-14 record in his 2010-2011 campaign, including a 3.80GAA and a 0.884 SAV%.

Jack is currently 3-0 including a shutout against the Sarnia Sting and sits fourth in the OHL among goalies with a 1.65GAA and a .0947 SAV% in three games between the pipes for Windsor this year.

The Attack will see adversity for the first time in the post-season

Owen Sound has been waiting for Windsor. The Memorial Cup winning Windsor Spitfires will come into their house and try to finish off the team that secured the top spot in Western Conference at the end of the regular season. Guys like Hishon, Wilson and Blacker are three good reasons to respect the Attack who also have three good goalies to choose from for game 1. It is likely that over-ager Scott Stajcer who has four playoff wins under his belt already will probably get the call.

Regarding the Spitfires, they now have a record for winning ten straight playoff series in the history of the Ontario Hockey League by defeating the Saginaw Spirit who just seemed to fold at the end. Windsor celebrates the win but the Attack are ready and in the dressing room already, looking at video, discussing the match-ups and figuring out the best way to get done in their favour. The Spitfires prepared themselves for the Attack by beating clubs like Erie and Saginaw who were considered favourites but the Spitfires proved them wrong.

If Zack Kassian stays hot for the Spitfires that would make a huge difference in this upcoming series. He is red-hot, coming off his first hat-trick in the playoffs against Saginaw. His physical presence is understood out there by all opposing teams who move as far away from him as possible because he brings on the pain. When he’s on the ice, they know it.

The most decorated defenceman in OHL history, Ryan Ellis is tied for second in the playoff scoring race. In fact, Windsor has five other Spitfires joining him in the top ten in scoring for the 2011 playoffs. Kuhnhackl and Johnston are even with Ellis at 16 points and Khoklachev just one point shy from the others has 15. Some of the muscle on the team including Carrick and Kass are at 14. Carrick leads the team with nine goals and sits in 8^th overall in the OHL at the moment.

Another defenceman, Adrian Robertson who came from the Peterborough Petes in the big trade is showing up for every game, and scoring in a few. He is a scrappy defender for sure but he has 13 points additionally.

Jack Campbell has been outstanding since he started this campaign in a winning fashion in Game 2 against a very offensive Erie team who had a few snipers who knew how to finish. Campbell kept Windsor in it, stopping the Luciani’s, McKegg’s and Varone’s most of the time.

Near the end, Campbell had outplayed Sadikov in this tight series. Saginaw had an even harder time solving him but Shalla gave him fits. Campbell is one of the main reasons the Spits are going to the conference finals. Campbell is a big game goalie from the US National Junior Development System and is playing to the max right now, like the two World Junior Tournament medals including a gold he received for a winning performance. This is his A game and fans happy to see it.  

     The coaching staff in Windsor are very experienced at winning titles, particularly Bob Jones who has a winning system to work with, inherited from part owner and former coach Bob Boughner. Jones has his own way of doing things too with the help of D.J. Smith and David Matsos, showing the team how to win.

In the upcoming series against a formidable Owen Sound team, the players are buying into the system Jones has implemented. The team also shows they know how to cope with the pressure associated with going far into the playoffs, a task for the coaching staff has instilled on them.

Ellis Leads Spits to 5-3 Win, Spits can Clinch Series with Game Six Win

Windsor didn’t get off to a good start on the road Saturday night in game five of the series.  However, the Spits stayed within striking distance and Spits Captain Ryan Ellis showed why he’s one of the best players period in junior hockey, scoring the go ahead goal for the Spits with less than four minutes left in the game to give Windsor their first lead of the game and a 5-3 win.

Windsor holds a three games to two series lead against the Spirit and can clinch the series, and a berth in the Western Conference Finals against Owen Sound with a victory later today in Windsor.  Game time is set for 7:05 pm.

Saginaw struck early.  Brandon Saad converted a Matt Sisca cross crease pass, catching the Spitfires flat footed in transition 44 seconds into the game to give Saginaw the early 1-0 lead.  After a Ryan Ellis holding the stick penalty, Peter Hermenegildo banged in a rebound from a Chiarot point shot midway through the period to make it a 2-0 lead for the Spirit.

Spits netminder Jack Campbell made some big save to keep the Spits in the game; denying Matt Sisca on a breakaway with 6 minutes left in the first period and making an exceptional diving save on a partial breakaway by Saad two minutes later.  Saginaw took their 2-0 edge to the dressing room after 20 minutes of play.

In the second period, Jake Carrick put the Spits on the board 10:29 into the second period powering past a Spirit defender to make it a 2-1 game.  After a Kerby Rychel hooking penalty, Saginaw restored their two-goal lead on the power play with just over seven minutes left in the frame on a Dalton Prout blast from the right point. 

Jake Carrick brought the Spits back to within one with his second of the night, beating Parks with a wrist shot high blocker making it 3-2.  A great hustle play by Jeff Brown in Saginaw’s zone left Carnevale wide open in front of the net, as Carny netted his fifth of the playoffs with 45 seconds left in the third period to tie the game at three apiece.

In the third period, Saginaw carried the play and had many chances, with Campbell continuing to shine in goal for the Spits.   Windsor broke the tie with less than four minutes to go, after Ryan Ellis snuck in front the point and tapped in a Zack Kassian wrist shot that squeaked by Mavric Parks at 16:06 of the third period, giving Windsor its first lead of the game at 4-3.

A Kenny Ryan empty netter with 18 seconds ended any chances of a Spirit comeback and secured a 5-3 victory for Windsor.

Fans are encouraged to wear red for each Spitfire home game as part of the Spits “Mission 9-10-11” theme for the 2011 OHL Playoffs.

Spits Respond, Win Game Four

There was no room for error. No excuses left for a slow start. 

So the Spitfires did what they've done so many times in the past three years: took it to their opponent in the biggest game of the year.

Ryan Ellis, Alexander Khokhlachev, Jeff Brown and Kenny Ryan staked the home side to a 4-0 lead in the first period, and an overwhelmed Saginaw club never recovered, as the Spits won 6-2 tonight, evening their Western Conference semifinal series with the Spirit at two games each.

Jake Carrick had a pair of goals for Windsor. Josh Shalla and John McFarland replied for Saginaw. Jack Campbell made 29 saves in goal for the win.

Campbell Makes 28 Saves, Windsor Takes Game One 3-0

Coming off the most exciting series in the OHL’s first round, Windsor travelled to the Dow Event Center, facing off against the Saginaw Spirit in game one of the Western Conference Semi-Finals Friday night.  From the opening bell, Windsor forced the action and controlled play, securing a 3-0 win and a one game lead in the series.  Jack Campbell registered his first career shutout with Windsor, making 28 saves to lead the Spits.

The first period saw a workmanlike effort put forth by Windsor, with the Spits controlling puck possession as they outshot the Sprit 13 to 5.  Spits netminder Jack Campbell and Spirit goalie Mavric Parks held a clean sheet for each side and both teams headed the dressing room in a 0-0 deadlock.

Windsor came out with purpose in the second period and dominated play in the early stages of the middle frame, keeping the Spirit in their end for the first ten minutes.  Stephen Johnston drew a tripping penalty from Saginaw rearguard Dalton Prout at the 7:15 mark, and O’Connor took a penalty after taking Khokhlachev down just after the first penalty ended but Parks stood tall for the Spirit and kept the game tied.

At 14:06 of the middle stanza, Kenny Ryan won a draw clean in Saginaw’s end and Stephen Johnston unleashed a rocket that found the back of the net to put Windsor up 1-0, extending Johnny’s point streak to eight games in the post-season.  After Jake Carrick drew a penalty from the home side, Spits rearguard Nick Ebert netted his first of the playoffs after banging in a Taylor Carnevale carom off the backboard to give Windsor a 2-0 lead with just over a minute left in the period.  Windsor outshot Saginaw 17 to 4.

Chances continued to pile up for the Spits early on in the third, but with Adrian Robertson drawing his second penalty of the game, Saginaw took to the power play.  Equal to the task, Jack Campbell made several key saves to deny the Spirit and preserve Windsor’s lead.  Midway through the third, Windsor’s forecheck created a scoring chance that Parks turned aside but Kenny Ryan banged in the rebound to give Windsor a three-goal edge. 

A Saginaw shot from the offensive blue line almost fooled Campbell with five minutes left in the contest but that’s as close as the Spirit came. 

Game two of the series will be played at the WFCU Centre Windsor on Sunday, April 10^th at 2:05 pm.  The Windsor Spitfires are currently selling tickets for this game and home game two on April 14^th.

Spitfires to face off against the Saginaw Spirt in Round 2.

He's had a big season for the Spitfires, leading the team in goals. But he took things to a whole new level on Tuesday.

Tom Kuhnhackl's team-leading fifth goal of the playoffs came with just 2:48 to play, as Windsor clipped Erie, 5-4, ending a hard-fought series in seven games.

The Spits led 4-2 heading into the final 20 minutes. But, as they did all series, the Otters stormed back, tying the game at 4-4 on goals by Greg McKegg and Tyler Hostetter. 

The winner started with a harmless looking Alexander Khokhlachev shot from the top of the right circle that Otter goalie Ramis Sadikov had a hard time controlling. It ended up landing at Kuhnhackl's feet.

And his swipe gave it just enough steam to get over the line.

It was Kuhnhackl's second goal of the night. KoKo, Ryan Ellis and Taylor Carnevale had the others.

Jack Campbell made 25 saves - many again spectacular - in goal for the Spits. Sadikov stopped 42.

The Spitfires open their Western Conference semi-final series with the Saginaw Spirit on Friday night.

If playoff success is truly built from the net out, the Windsor Spitfires may be on the verge of something big again this spring.

The club continues to get outstanding play from goalie Jack Campbell, who for the second time in three weeks is our Tecumseh and South Walkerville Vision Centres Windsor Spitfires Player of the Week - this time for period ending Sunday, March 27th.

In two games last week, Jack posted a 1.99 Goals Against Average and a .938 save percentage.

He made 35 saves in Game One of the Western Conference quarter-final series with Erie on Thursday, in a 2-1 loss at the WFCU Centre. Two nights later, Campbell made 40 saves while backstopping the Spits to a huge 4-3, double overtime win in Erie that squared the series at a game apiece.

Campbell currently ranks third statistically among all OHL goaltenders in the playoffs with a 2.00 GAA and .938 save percentage overall, as the Spitfires hold a 2-1 series lead heading into Game Four tonight in Erie. 

The entire staff at Tecumseh and South Walkerville Vision Centres congratulates Jack Campbell on his continued outstanding play, and wishes the team the best of luck as it continues its drive for three straight Memorial Cup titles. Go Spits Go!

Campbell Confident Between the Pipes in Round 1

Since Game 1, Jack Campbell has shown us 3 games worth of spectacular saves. On Saturday,

Game 2 at Tullio Arena, Jack held us in there for two overtime periods to squeak out a win.  This is to be expected coming from a player who backstopped for the U.S. World Juniors twice, winning gold in 2009/2010 and then a bronze in this year’s tournament. Campbell is a first round selection of the Dallas Stars, 12^th overall in 2010. Just recently, he signed a 3 year entry level contract with them.

Coach Bob Jones remarked about Game three, “It was a strong game from Jack.” On the other side, Sadikov surrendered six goals in the game, opening the door with 3 in the 3^rd in a matter of 62 seconds. A far cry from the outstanding performance he exhibited in each of the previous games.

“The guys came out in the third period to win,” says Campbell. “We wanted to go out there to take it to them!” “It’s great to get recognition but I came to help the team win.” Campbell managed to impress in Game 3 by offering a GAA @ 2.00 and a S% @ .938. He came up with 30 saves.

The 3 quick goals in the third and Campbell’s exceptional play have a way of instilling confidence in the team from Campbell to Kassian. According to Campbell, “the win gives us a lot of momentum going into Game 4.”

Jack Campbell seems to stand up during the playoffs. He thrives in big games. “Both goalies are focused,” exclaims Jones “Your best players need to be the best players in big games. Campbell answered the call in every game so far.

Spitfires Win with Jack and Three of a Kind

Fresh off a big overtime win in Erie on Saturday night, the Spits were looking to start fast and play a full 60 minutes in Game 3 at the WFCU Centre.

Turns out they did both tonight.

Leading 3-2 after 40 minutes, the Spitfires scored three times in a 1:02 span of the third period, on their way to a convincing 6-2 win over the Erie Otters. The victory gives the Spits a 2-1 lead in the best-of-7 Western Conference quarter-final series.

Ryan Ellis, Stephen Johnston and Jake Carrick had the other Windsor goals, while Jack Campbell was outstanding once again - looking confident all night long and making 30 saves for the win.

Jack Campbell has never shied away from the spotlight.

And now that his goaltending partner, John Cullen, has been sidelined with a knee injury, the Spitfires will be counting on him to take them deep into the playoffs.

If last week is any indication, the post-season run could be a thriller.

Campbell posted a 2-0-0 record, with a 2.67 goals against average and a .906 save percentage last week, earning him Tecumseh and South Walkerville Vision Centres and Windsor Spitfires Player of the Week honours for the period ending March 13th.

"We've had three big wins as of late," Campbell told windsorspitfires.com. "To get everyone back healthy is huge. We've been rolling."

Campbell says his best play is yet to come, down the stretch and in the playoffs.

"It's huge for the team to be confident in their goalie. Lately, I've had the type of confidence back that I have had my whole career. I just want to keep this momentum going into the playoffs."

Last Thursday, Campbell made 34 saves and stopped two of three shooters in leading the Spitfires to a 4-3 shootout victory at the WFCU Centre over the Western Conference regular season champion Owen Sound Attack squad. Three days later, Campbell led the team to yet another extra time win at home, turning aside 24 shots as Windsor defeated the Sarnia Sting 4-3.

Campbell will start Thursday night, as the Spitfires kick off the final week of the regular season against the Saginaw Spirit at the WFCU Centre. Windsor visits the Soo Greyhounds the following night before a potentially huge match-up in Saginaw in the final game of the season on Saturday - a game that could decide first place in the West Division and a top-2 seed in the first round of the playoffs.

Spitfires Win Sunday Shootout

In dire need of two points, and without five regulars, the Spitfires fought back for a 4-3 shootout win over the Guelph Storm on Sunday afternoon at the WFCU Centre.

Tom Kuhnhackl had the shootout winner, while Kenny Ryan and Nick Ebert each had a goal and an assist for the Spitfires (35-22-3-3), who moved back into sole possession of fourth place in the Western Conference with the win.

Jack Campbell made 27 saves, many of them spectacular, just hours after he was forced to stay home from Saturday night's trip to Plymouth with the flu.

Spitfires - The Game That Never Was

With the Plymouth Whalers and Spitfires It should have been the game of the year. But instead, it turned into the game that never was on a blustery Saturday night in Plymouth.

Jamie Devane scored twice, while James Livingston and Robbie Czarnik added a goal and two assists apiece, as Plymouth beat Windsor, 6-2, in front of 4,050 fans at the Compuware Sports Arena.

The win moves the Whalers back into fourth place in the Western Conference, a point up on the Spitfires.

The Spitfires (34-22-3-3) were up against it even before the game started here tonight. With Jack Campbell at home with a touch of the flu, John Cullen was penciled in as Windsor's starting goalie. But, already not feeling well on the short ride to Plymouth, Cullen suffered an injury in the warm-up.

That forced Michael Nishi to make his first start of the season, with no back-up in sight. And the 17-year-old didn't get much help off the start, as the Spits were whistled for three minor penalties in the first seven minutes.

The Whalers converted on two of those, on goals by Beau Schmitz and Jamie Devane to take an early 2-0 lead.

James Livingston's 21st of the year made it 3-0 Plymouth before the opening 20 minutes was done.

The teams traded goals in the second period before fight night got underway.

Nick Czinder, Craig Duininck and Saverio Posa all grabbed a partner after Posa was taken in awkwardly along the endboards in the Windsor zone by Garrett Meurs.

Czinder and Posa were ejected, along with Plymouth's Beau Schmitz and Mitchell Heard.

With the score 6-1 Plymouth, more fireworks erupted in the closing seconds of the second period, as Jake Carrick got tangled up with goalie Matt Mahalak.

Tom Kuhnhackl rounded out the scoring, on a 5-on-3 advantage in the third. His 36th of the season puts him alone in top spot among Spitfire skaters.
